Re: Tour in a BMW Isetta?

Travel Rob ·
That was Steve Urkels Car on Family Matters!. LOL. There are places like one in Dallas where you can rent these classics.A bit steep but an alternative to buying. I went the opposite route and liked one of the biggest cars ever made.I wanted a 1973 Chrysler Imperial for years before I got one. That was so big it was banned in demolition derbys because it was unfair to the other cars.

Re: Popularity of POD hotels grows

Paul Heymont ·
Funny seeing this come back...50 years ago, there was something like this at Washington: A pair of what looked like trailers, mounted above stairs with a small office at the bottom to rent resting places by the hour or afternoon. And the next size up is the very spartan motels like Premiere Classe and Formule One...we call them "a bed in a box," which is about what they are. Great for when you fly in late at night and just want to sleep and then go in the morning!

Re: Is a stopover in Iceland worthwhile

Paul Heymont ·
A lot of questions! Let me try a few answers... Absolutely I'd say stop in Iceland. Every place in the world is unique, but Iceland is more so, geographically, in climate, and in history. Half a week (or even a week) won't do more than scratch the surface, but you'll be able to visit incredible waterfalls, climb on glaciers, see evidence of recent volcanic activity, and realize that under it all is a huge pool of thermally heated water that provides over 70% of the nation's energy. If that...

Re: RV rental for road trip

Theodore Behr ·
It is cost effective, but RV is not for everyone. I don't suggest you try it with 2 kids on a long trip for the first time. Rent one where you live for a weekend and see how much you like it. If you like it, rent one for the trip above. But if you end up hating it, you'll have a bad time from Denver to Cali.

That's an interesting tripod, TravelandNature, but you won't catch me on anything that potentially could launch me as a projectile at 60 mph. And, unless you're very macho, you'll not enjoy yourself in bad weather. So if you want to walk on the wild side, rent a convertible, or buy an older one, drive it for a month and sell it in Seattle (not exactly a city for convertibles, except on rare days). Regarding on where to go and how to plan the trip, I'd make a point of going by my local AAA...

Car Rental: Making it a bit easier

Paul Heymont ·
One of the worst moments in travel, for me, is getting there, getting off the plane, getting the bags, and then waiting forEVER at the car rental counter. I usually rent from Hertz, unless the price difference after my discount is big, and the main reason is Gold service that lets me bypass the counter, get in the car and go. Other companies have similar 'membership' arrangements. But I just found that it's worth checking around if you're renting from not-your-regular company; things are...

I've not done this trip, although it's floated up my destinations list and hopefully will be something we can do in a few years. You've an awful lot of travel packed into two weeks, and the only efficient way to do much of it is to rent a car. You can do it by buses and trains, but that would add days to the journey and take away from your valuable travel experiences. Yeah, I'm still brainstorming. I am considering, if we can rent a car before we leave Rovinj and if it is allowed cross borders into Trieste, spend our time in Trieste and then onto Plitvice. We can then drop the car on our way to Ljubljana--Zagreb if we have to and then train/bus to Ljubljana. Those bloody gorgeous lakes. They sure know how to complicate things! ;-) Ok, so do I, too. But again, if I regret not attempting to visit them, then they are worth the attempt to get to.

That is absolutely a valid question. And my answer is: Yes or I wouldn't be able to get to work every day. My Mustang is a manual. My father can drive a stick as well. I will likely put us both down as drivers in case he has too much pivo. ;-) I don't know what I was thinking with renting a car in Croatia and driving it to Trieste. Decided to forego going by ferry from Venice and instead by train to Trieste and will bus to Rovinj after our time there and then rent a car to take to the Lakes.
