Need Suggestions For a Short Stay in Norway

I'll be flying to Oslo with my son (mid 20's) in late May and staying 5 days before heading off. I'd like to see a small town nearby with some historical architecture . We will probably rent a car . We are open to train travel as well. Any suggestions for Oslo and the surrounding area would be appreciated. I like architecture,gardens, hiking and art. And our budget is that of budget travelers. Thanks!
