Something fishy about this Roman shipwreck...
An ancient Roman vessel carrying 3000 jars of garum, the Roman fish sauce that was found on nearly every Roman table as a condiment and source of salt, has been found in 200 meters of water off the coast of northeastern Liguria. The 25-meter-long ship is one of only five Roman "deep sea" vessels ever found in the Mediterranean. Archaeologists first started looking for it after fishermen brought up fragments of clay jars in the area in 2012. They were recognized as a type that was used only...

Re: Important Winter Camping Trips
A big temptation among new campers is to dive into your bag with some of your day clothes still on - the insulation value of keeping a fresh outfit just for sleeping is immense. If you have a small fire, put a saucer sized rock in it; when you retire, (after a short brisk stomp around to get circulation going), you can wrap the stone in a dirty t-shirt and put it in the bottom of your bag. It'll keep your feet warm for ages !

Re: Kykkos Monastery, Cyprus
Ian, once again you bring back some great memories for me. The Kykkos monastery is an interesting site to visit. Cyprus was the only place I have been where I was able to ski in January up at Troodos one weekend and scuba dive the next weekend in Limassol. Another site worth the visit to is the ruins of the Bellapais Abbey, on the Turkish northern part of the island. It is south of Kyrenia and has amazing views of the northern coastal plains of Cyprus. Thanks for the amazing blog.
