Re: Half of Americans: What I DIDN'T do last summer...

Travel Rob ·
I think the important numbers would be how this compares to last year or the last five years. And while I agree most Americans don't take enough or long vacations ,I do think the travel industry in the US is doing better. The airlines have record profits and I know some states like Florida are showing record visitors the last few years including domestic travelers. I haven't seen the summer numbers yet, but as of June Florida's on pace for another record year. ...

Re: No place like home? 41% of Americans stayed there!

PortMoresby ·
Is there a difference between those who can't afford to travel and those who believe they can't afford it, but could? I cannot tell you how many times those with far greater resources than I have said to me that they wished they could travel. The obvious reason is priorities, not lack of funds. To tell you the truth, I'm surprised it wasn't higher than 41%. I'm also surprised at what they describe as "the other end of the spectrum", those who took more than 20 days. A measly 20 days being...

Re: No place like home? 41% of Americans stayed there!

Paul Heymont ·
You're certainly right about the prioritiess and affordability; I've never understood, for instance, couples who put off having a glorious honeymoon in order to pay for a fancy wedding. Or who save for years for a big trip instead of camping with the kids while they are young... At the other end, though, there are lots of people who've had very hard times the last few years, and may be cashing in vacation time for home repair or mortgage payment. And as for the 20 days (4 working...

Re: No place like home? 41% of Americans stayed there!

DrFumblefinger ·
I think a lot of it is due to a bad economy. Many many working people out there are struggling and don't have spare funds to take a family on a trip. Travel for 4 people is often 3-4 x as expensive as travel for one person. And as PM points out, it's also a matter of priorities. To some folks vacation means going in style, like staying at an all inclusive luxury resort, not just camping. I'm actually curious if the 40% who said they didn't actually take vacation would even consider going...

Re: Would you believe: Beach tours to N. Korea!

I would like to see how life is in North Korea although it looks the minders have a tight grip on what you can see. From the documentaries, it seems similar to cold war era Romania. One of the most interesting documentaries I've seen is "Crossing the Line" about a American defector to North Korea. After the Korean War ,six American soldiers defected . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Joseph_Dresnok https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/s...la&hsimp=yhs-001

Re: Money Saving Tips, for your Big Trip – Part 3

DrFumblefinger ·
A nice conclusion to an interesting and helpful series, Samantha. Thanks! Some people fund their travels by living very simply on the road -- keeping expenses to a few bucks a day. That might work for them, but I travel to experience a place. And that means admissions to attractions, eating good quality meals, staying at a decent hotel etc. I'm old enough that an element of comfort and civilization are important to me. I'd rather live simply at home than on the road, and these tips provide...
