Rob, can you tell us what we're seeing in the last photo? PS: I love your layout seeing it on my desktop computer. A small phone screen doesn't do it justice.

It is spectacular and I was impressed it's become such a transportation hub.The chairs are really comfortable. If your waiting there, remember Olvera St, is across the street and Chinatown and Little Tokyo are just a few blocks away!

Re: Serra's Church, Mission San Juan Capistrano, California. Where Gumbo Was #46

PortMoresby ·
Somewhere I've got a snapshot of a very young me with a tiny lady holding an object who had insisted my friend take our picture in the garden together. It was in the village of Petra, Majorca and she officiated at the small museum commemorating Junipero Serra's birthplace. I was spending the summer on the island and every student educated in California knows his name almost as well as their own. The address of my high school was El Camino Real, Father Serra's road from mission to mission and...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, April 29, 2014: Water Lilies, Mission San Juan Capistrano, California

The lovely lilies make it a bit easier to swallow the disappearance of the birds... Sorry for the bad pun, but this cartoon may explain why the swallows don't "come back to Capistrano!"

More on the swallows, which now mostly nest a few miles away: Staff at the Mission of San Juan Capistrano are trying to lure the swallows back by playing male swallow mating calls, hoping it will attract the females to the traditional nests, and that they will be followed by the males. Here's a VIDEO from the Orange County Register, and more INFO from the Mother Nature Network.

Re: Yellowstone National Park in Winter

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks so very much for making us a part of your fascinating road-trip by sharing your visit to this unique place at such a special time. It's so rare to actually talk to someone who visited Yellowstone in the winter, much less to read such a wonderfully written report and to share in your experience through your beautiful photos. I'm sorry you didn't get to see wolves in the wild, but in this you are not alone. As many times as I've been in the wilderness, I've yet to see them (though I was...

That is truly excellent news! Thanks for sharing it, Marilyn. I love these old missions and I'm glad more USA sites are finally being recognized. Seems the UNESCO committee views North America as it's "Orphan continent".

Re: Mission San Juan Capistrano -- "Worth a Visit"

GarryRF ·
Interesting tour DrF. Other than a living museum does the mission have a function today ? Very comprehensive collection of photos and well described too. There must be a long and interesting story to these missions - other than teaching religion. Fascinating history of a new country. Thanks.

Re: Mission San Juan Capistrano -- "Worth a Visit"

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks the comment Garry. Yes the mission still functions as a place of worship. But the main place of worship is the new basilica which is right next door. Today it is mostly a museum.
