Sept. 4 2016: Rockefeller Center Decoration

Jonathan L ·
Many people walk up and down 5th Ave. past Rockefeller Center. They look in the windows. They at the garden and at the Prometheus statue. I am not sure how many people look up at the buildings to see the decorative work built there. Originally the building and even the entrances were given different themes, and were decorated accordingly.

Re: Sept. 4 2016: Rockefeller Center Decoration

Paul Heymont ·
Several of the original 14 Rockefeller Center buildings, mainly the ones facing Fifth Avenue, were to be the 'international buildings,' each named for a European country, and each intended to attract commercial and government tenants from that country, and decorated with matching art. The British Empire Building is across a promenade called Channel Gardens from La Maison Francaise; the next building up is the Palazzo d'Italia. The next two, International Building and International Building...

Thanks Paul - very interesting. Wouldn't it be wonderful if those magnificent buildings had a brief description of their history on the outside. Like the American Eagle with the Stars and Stripes carved into the sand stone facia in Church St in Liverpool !

I am a vegetarian, and thus the very heavy reliance on fish products from the Black Sea made for some creative eating. A Mediterranean type cuisine along with traditional "Russian" foods were readily available. There were lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and nuts, which were prepared in flavorful dishes.

It's a fascinating looking city. Not sure if you had the show in France, Gilles, but it reminds me of the futuristic city of the Jetsons carton that was produced by Hannah Barbara.

Paul Heymont ·
Hadn't thought of the Jetsons... (aka Flintstones in Space...LOL). But here's a real building that seems to catch elements, but with a more restrained hand, of the Brasilia Cathedral. It's the Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool, of which more on Wednesday!

Re: July 24, 2016: Brasilia’s Stunning Architecture (Brazil)

Grand Escapades ·
I do not know the show, but to me, Brasilia looks like nothing else I had seen and experience: on the one hand completely futuristic, on the other hand now also (at least form a European point of view) completely anachronistic, as he city is built around having a car (no way you can walk in this city)... But it is a very rewarding visit !!!
