Re: Sometimes a Trip is just a Walk in the Park

Paul Heymont ·
Garry's note about Olmsted's travels (and he was quite a traveler) set me off on a quick look to find the park he was referring to (which I didn't; apparently "people's garden" was a description rather than a name?) and found that Liverpool has more parks and especially top-class parks than any British city besides London. The article also mentioned that for reasons of health—and keeping social unrest down—the city commissioners set out on a park-building spree starting about 1833. Many...

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? (11/20/13)

Paul Heymont ·
It's been a great game, Gumbo fans, and you've now pinned it to the wall. Tuesday morning's post will confirm your correct answer, with more details. It was fun playing with the group. In answer to the question: I've only been to Kaliningrad twice, both times on paper. Most recently, I was reading Tatiana, and was struck by Smith's comments on the rebuilding of churches, partly as vanity projects of the new capitalist class. When I came to the chapter in which Renko is attacked at the...

Re: Weekend getaways. Where's your favorite spot

DrFumblefinger ·
Living in Calgary now, my favorite weekend get away is the Canadian Rockies. Banff is just an hour away and with it thousands of square kilometers of unspoiled wilderness, like the scene below in Sunshine Meadows: or nearby Kananaskis Country. And in the winter it's beautiful with snow and has world class skiing. Sot he Canadian Rockies is where I like to go.

Re: Can it be ?? smart airlines are upping Economy Class

PortMoresby ·
There was a time in the early days of business class when it was simply a section in the front of economy, more like premium economy today. The gap has certainly grown over the years with business class getting swankier and economy losing serious ground. I've often wondered where the bottom would be. We can only hope that today's steerage is the bottom and the creep will be in the other direction although I have no illusions that up will be a more difficult road than down. It always is.

I agree with the sentiment of Garfield the Cat, who moans to the airline attendant " May I please be upgraded to some sort of class ? !". Surely, things can only improve from the current mindset of treating the human passengers as bulky, troublesome cargo.

Re: I get to Boomerang to Spain ! Cheap !

Paul Heymont ·
I'm not sure on your question about WB's trip, because it depends on routing. From NY, AA most often uses their own seats for the ocean hop, but does use some BA seats from Newark. Other cities...not sure how many BA seats used in that direction. And sometimes it's a matter of class. For instance, last year flying home from Paris, there were AA seats in business class available non-stop, but economy was only available on BA Orly-London-Newark.

Re: Airlines investing big in airport lounges

Paul Heymont ·
Worth noting also that some of the high-bonus (and high annual fee for some) credit cards include varying forms of lounge access for cardholders, even when traveling in cattle class. I've got one now that provides Lounge Club, whose members are only occasionally airline-operated, and another that provides AA Admiral's Club. I'm looking forward to trying that one out!

Re: Looking for Historical Landmarks !

Paul Heymont ·
Yet another reminder that history doesn't happen only in black-and-white in a distant past! When I was a history teacher, one of the favorite lessons each year discussed the 1776 Battle of Brooklyn, one of the largest-scale engagements of armies up to that time. I used a handout map of the battle areas and the routes of the British and American armies across the borough, and the class plotted their homes along the map. We were then able to describe how the main British force went up King's...

Re: Ever wonder what the inside of the A380 looks like

Paul Heymont ·
I'd like to try the A380 someday...but only in economy. It's not that much wider than many other wide-bodies (3-4-3 seating compared to 2-5-2 or 3-4-3 on others) and it's divided into sections that keep the perspective comfortable. But it appears that the big trend these days in first-class and business is seats that are practically cocoons, and separate the adjoining passengers with consoles, tables and who-knows-what-else. What happened to sitting companionably with your spouse, maybe even...
