Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 9, 2015: All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum
I hope you washed down that dimsum with a nice drink at the Top-of-the Mark. No better place to enjoy the sunset in San Francisco, PM.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 9, 2015: All-You-Can-Eat Dim Sum
Last time I was at Top of the Mark I was in high school. It was THE place to go on prom night, along with the Tonga Room across the street at the Fairmont. I actually seriously considered staying at one place or the other on this road trip but opted for the free parking at the hostel, so annoying was the price of parking on Nob Hill. Interesting how decision-making can work. And btw, check in next Saturday and see where I actually did have a drink after dim sum.

Re: Observatory of New York's One World Trade Center to Open May 29th
At those prices, they can certainly claim to be "sky-high!" That's $116 for a family of four for an elevator ride. And even at that, it's only a couple of dollars more than the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, and the same as the Empire State Building charges for its 86th floor deck, with an additional charge for the top deck. It seems a shame that families on a budget have no access to the iconic "NY from the air" view that their children may be clamoring for.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#120)
Ah yes...I have been to this place. Nice pics DrFumblefinger. Your first photo threw me for a loop, for I don't remember a sphinx being at this location. But when I saw the other photos, like the lobby shot with the huge staircase containing statues of two large animals (?? bison), and especially the exterior shot with a figure on the top dome...looks like a golden boy....hmmmmmmmm.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, April 13, 2015: Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii
Hi Marilyn and Garry Marilyn, I'm so glad you enjoyed this POD. Thank you for the kind words. They are much appreciated. If you have not yet had the chance, I do hope that one day you will be able to visit this magnificent canyon. Garry...if a lovely attractive lady asked me if I hiked to the top of a mountain to take these photos, the answer of course would be "Why yes...yes I did (cough cough)." Between you and me, I took the easy way by climbing the short staircase from the parking lot to...

Re: World's most attractive libraries
There's always more to know about libraries, so 2 interesting items noted in this morning's Bookmarks from The Guardian: 1. A book, The Library: A Catalogue of Wonders, by Stuart Kells . . . 2. and his item in The Guardian, From Bag End to Babel : top 10 libraries in fiction. I hope to get a copy of the book when the price of used copies comes down (if ever)! If you look at The Library , scroll down the page for more things library and also click on "Source notes" for a long list of fun stuff.

A most unusual car, Bob. My first impression in looking at your top photo is that it was modeled after one of the amphibians we just saw in Costa Rica, but it is a cool and unusual car that I've not seen before.

Re: Homes of Leadville
Before its founding in 1793, Danville was a huge tobacco producer when no other crop would succeed except the “Bright Leaf” tobacco which made Danville tobacco one of the most sought after varieties and top tobacco producing areas in the world. Competing tycoons built many homes along Main Street trying to one up each other. As a result, Danville’s Millionaires’ Row of homes became a symbol of Victorian and Edwardian architecture in the early United States. George G.

If I'd been 10 seconds faster, PHeymont, that top photo would have had a bald eagle sitting on the tip of the pine tree to the left. Just flew away as I put the camera to my eye. But maybe that would have been too perfect.... Northeastern Washington state and the Idaho panhandle are really beautiful and not that visited.

Re: Luggage to withstand airline handling
I have two favorite suitcases I use when needing checked luggage. Both have similar construction, having a hard base and sides, but a soft expandable top. Hence, they combine the protection of a hard suitcase for the most part, but offer the advantage of being somewhat expandable. I wrap delicate purchases in laundry or a jacket, place near the hard base of the bag and without exception nothing has broken in transit (so far). One bag is also an Eagle Creek bag and the other is made by...

Re: Chip Credit Cards to Change the Way US Tips at Restaurants
Actually, that's only one way of looking at it...another is that it may push many people (I included) to resume cash tips. The "convenient" suggested amounts, which even now appear on many slips can be very deceptive, both because they usually place the normal or usual amount as if it were the lowest "acceptable" amount, but also because often—not always—they calculate percent not on the restaurant bill but on the total of the bill plus tax. The difference can be significant. Interestingly,...

Re: Emirates places huge Jet order
Always interesting how airlines are compared for size (most passengers? most routes? most planes?). That's the case here, because actually Emirates doesn't have the largest fleet, but does have the most wide-body planes; it's nearly the only type they fly. But in overall numbers, they don't even make the Wikipedia top 19 list here: Incidentally, the Bloomberg article says those planes are going into service in the year ending March 2017 (that is, in the next 12-13 months). If that's...

That's good to know. Many companies don't understand how important good customer service is. Booking.com is my preferred hotel booking site when I travel abroad because they do such a good job describing the accommodations. You'll pretty much know exactly what kind of room to expect. Also, if you are a frequent user you qualify for your their "genius" discounts from select hotels -- an extra 10% off. Nice! For example, when we visited Palermo, we stayed at a top quality hotel with excellent...

Re: Quebec — A Walled European Fortress In America
Thanks for the note, Chatterbot2. Yes, Quebec is relatively under-touristed, especially when compared to Europe. If you want to visit a 400 year old European stype fortress, don't want to fly across the Atlantic, want to go to place where French is the dominant language, want great food and friendly folks, then Quebec City should be at the top of your travel list.

Re: A visit to Great Basin National Park
Well, for a start, make sure you visit Reno, Travel Luver. It's a much small town than Vegas but still has all the casinos, restaurants, etc that you'd expect from a Nevada City. From here it's easy to do a day trip to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or down to Carson City. Reno is actually the closest major city to Great Basin National Park, say about a 3-4 hour drive. Vegas is 6-7 hour drive away. Salt Lake City is closer to Great Basin than Vegas. But you really can't do it as...

Re: Sometimes a Trip is just a Walk in the Park
I suspect a walk in the park is a habit acquired over time and familiarity with a place. I have a feeling, too, that the urge to go at top speed is the initial and overriding one. Or is it years and not travel experience that slows us down enough for such places to finally come into focus? Looking back over the decades I think maybe it's the latter.

Re: Sometimes a Trip is just a Walk in the Park
Garry's note about Olmsted's travels (and he was quite a traveler) set me off on a quick look to find the park he was referring to (which I didn't; apparently "people's garden" was a description rather than a name?) and found that Liverpool has more parks and especially top-class parks than any British city besides London. The article also mentioned that for reasons of health—and keeping social unrest down—the city commissioners set out on a park-building spree starting about 1833. Many...

If anyone's really interested in finding this pier it's the details that count. Despite having the suggestion blown off earlier I still see mountains in the center distance, leading me to believe it's in Southern California. The railing is distinctive, 2 boards together at the top then just 1 more below. A few lights, all on one side. Then the cross bracing below and an "L" or "T" at the end for the angle of the shot. The closest I've seen so far are Ventura and Newport Beach but neither...
