Re: Polar bears: Hard to live with, hard to escape
While they seem cute, polar bears are one of the few animals that actively hunt humans as a food source. They are quite dangerous and very lethal. The Norwegian town reminds me of Churchill, Manitoba, another great place to polar bear watch.

The recent terror attacks in Paris apparently haven't put off its lure for visitors; Airbnb reports it's the top New Year holiday booking in Europe, and second only to New York world-wide. The rest of the top 5 are London with 35,000, Sydney with 25,000 and Barcelona with 24,000. The figures indicate a quick and solid comeback for Paris's tourism industry; immediately after the...

Re: January 4, 2016: Fog over Yonkers NY
My first thought, looking at this morning's picture, was how much it has the feel of Impressionist painting, and in particular some of these scenes by Monet (above) and Pisarro (below). For fog, of course, no accident that two of them were painted in London!

Re: Niagara Falls: Pretty much the complete guide
A nice summary of an amazing place! Basically the water of the great lakes flows over this precipice -- but actually just half the water. Ontario Hydro diverts the other half of the water for electricity production and to reduce the rate of erosion of the precipice. The town itself is very touristy, but after you've visited the falls I'd recommend leaving town and exploring some of the Niagara Peninsula. Great orchards and vineyards, small towns, like Niagara-on-the-Lake, and one of my...

Re: New York State Fair—Supporting young farmers
Thanks for a great piece! I am fascinated by farm life and the talented and hard working people who do it. I too have heard that small farms are dying out and there are probably statistics to prove it .Over the past year though, I've met quite a few small farmers that have innovative ideas that are doing good business. And I've seen some communities that really support local farmers markets. So if it's a passion for these young farmers, I hope they use their talents.
