Re: Casa Bacardi Rum Plant, San Juan, Puerto Rico

DrFumblefinger ·
I've visited the Bacardi plant too, and remember being quite impressed by it. As I recall, the original was in Cuba and the family moved to P.R. to escape Castro. And I'm proud to see you standing after those free samples! Thanks for the post.

You won't find me eating oysters there (or anywhere!) but I've always loved the Guastavini tile ceilings. Not only gorgeous, but a lot like stepping back into another time in the station (Jack Finney fans will know what I mean...)

Re: Guinness Storehouse, Dublin, Ireland. Where Gumbo was #44

PortMoresby ·
While not a beer fan I did once live in Golden, Colorado within smelling distance of Coors when the wind was blowing my direction. Which it obviously was not the day I decided that was the house for me. But I'll concede, it could have been worse. My only other distantly related experience was spending a few days in Norfolk with Val Guinness, a very gracious & entertaining lady. Beer is a thing I lump together with team sports and spending time beneath the hood of a car for no discernible...

Re: Guinness Storehouse, Dublin, Ireland. Where Gumbo was #44

DrFumblefinger ·
A love for beverages is a personal and often acquired taste. Others share your feelings about beer. Others feel the same way about wine, hard spirits, coffee or tea. To each, their beverage of choice! I enjoy sampling whatever beverage is popular in a region. For example, when in the hills of Sri Lanka, there's nothing better than a cup of BOPF tea. In Italy, it makes sense to focus on the wine. When in Ireland, you need to try the Guinness and some of their triple distilled whiskey.

Interesting, Dr F, that you're a fan of fannings (the F in BOPF). The smallest particles of the tea, what tea bags are made from, I too prefer it to whole leaf as I like my tea strong. Now we have a beverage in common.

Re: Where Gumbo Watched the Sun Rise (Puzzle #20)

DrFumblefinger ·
Acadia is one of the few "main" US National Parks I've yet to visit. A serious gap in my travel map.... Having just spent a large number of hours on an Air Canada flight to and from South America, I found it interesting to read the claim that Acadia sees the first USA Sunrise. The ads on the AirCanada video screens from Newfoundland made it very clear that if you want to see the first sunrise in North America, you need to go there instead. That is something I hope to do soon as well.

The 32-story, 1641-room hotel was originally constructed in 1986 as The Peabody Orlando. I remember well when all traffic stopped on International Drive to allow the Ducks the time to cross the street safely - then enter the Duck pond inside the Hotel.
