Re: Coastal California: Pigeon Point Lighthouse

PortMoresby ·
In that part of the coast, it's more likely to have been artichokes, grown there and all the way down to Salinas/Monterey. Avocados are a Southern California crop.

Re: Coastal California: Pigeon Point Lighthouse

DrFumblefinger ·
When I lived in So California, an acquaintance was an avocado farmer. He informed us that at the time about 10% of the avocado crop was stolen each year -- probably higher now. The most stolen crop in America, and impossible to trace I love old lighthouses and their setting on the roughest places on the coast. Thanks for sharing this one with us, PM.

I'm not surprised about the avocado theft, guacamole being one of the CA food groups.

Gentlemen, I think you missed my point somewhere above. Artichokes grow in Northern California, avocados in Southern California. As far as I've observed, never the twain shall meet. Just to confirm, is this it? If so, not avocado.

No, really, we know the difference. And we saw the avocados and ate them. I haven't found production figures yet for San Mateo County yet, but it is significant.

Re: Visiting John Steinbeck country. 3) Cannery Row, Monterey, California

PortMoresby ·
I first visited Cannery Row in 1964, on a trip from the Bay Area in my '53 Plymouth with friends, going to the Monterey Folk Festival. We slept free on the floor of a room in the Monterey Hotel of someone we met and generally had the kind of fun kids had in the mid-'60s. At that time Cannery Row looked not unlike the photo at the top, and nothing like it does today. It's the same old story for old-timers everywhere, it ain't what it was, if you're a fan of funky, as I am. The difference, in...

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks for the comment, PortMoresby. I am not fond of places badly decayed, but it would be nice to have more of the original cannery scenario still in place, instead of all the tourist traps. Agree about the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's not to be missed, but was omitted from this piece because it didn't exist in John Steinbeck's time.

I'm so jealous you got to see deer! We were there a couple of weeks ago and the most wildlife we saw were some birds and adventurous squirrels. I was hoping for a bear or deer. Random question - I've been trying to find out the temperature of the water in Yosemite. Mirror Lake in particularly. You don't happen to know, do you? I went swimming in Mirror Lake and everyone looked at me like I'd spontaneously sprouted a second head.

Thanks for all your comments. Followup: DrY. Yes, you and your family should see this sometime. You would love it! We need to plan out a trip to California for you that includes its best parks and some city sites. PHeymont. Yes, you must DO Yosemite. I recommend mid to late May as the best time to go as the waterfalls are brimming with meltwater. I like hikes of all types and can still do "moderate" hikes, though no longer take on "challenging" ones. But the Mariposa grove is doable by...

Interesting tour DrF. Other than a living museum does the mission have a function today ? Very comprehensive collection of photos and well described too. There must be a long and interesting story to these missions - other than teaching religion. Fascinating history of a new country. Thanks.

Thanks the comment Garry. Yes the mission still functions as a place of worship. But the main place of worship is the new basilica which is right next door. Today it is mostly a museum.

Re: A Day at the Zoo: San Diego, California

IslandMan ·
A well written and informative blog piece Dr F...I agree with you that zoos should not be abandoned. There is a place for them especially when it comes to protecting endangered species. The San Diego Zoo certainly looks like a great place to visit and the variety of animals there is a regular Noah's Ark (good to see a few Aussie Koalas). You've captured some amazing shots in the gallery too.

Re: A Day at the Zoo: San Diego, California

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks IslandMan! Probably the rarest animal at the zoo is the California Condor. Only the San Diego and Los Angeles zoos exhibit these birds and were instrumental in saving them from extinction. With only a few dozen birds left in the wild, a controversial decision was made several decades ago to capture them all and place the remaining birds in these two zoos for a captive breeding program. They now number several hundred and are slowly being re-introduced into the wild, with limited...

Thank you, Andre! This was the third zoo I've ever seen giant pandas in. And by far it was the best one. They had two pandas, in separated but adjoining enclosures (one male, one female). Both were sitting there eating bamboo and seemed to enjoy watching the throng of people walking by them. It was as though the zoo's visitors were there to entertain the pandas, rather than the other way around. As for bears, I'm always happier to see them in a zoo than on a hiking trail in the Rockies...
