I've noted that travelers seem to vary as much in what they do during a flight as with everything else in life.  Some are glued to videos on their backseat monitors or ipads.  Others love to read their kindles or -- in a throwback to the good old days -- real printed books and magazines.  Some seem to need certain headphones or articles of clothing, etc.

I'm kind of curious about what the TravelGumbo community can't live without on a plane flight.

For me, it's recorded books.  Formerly filling my iPod but now on my smart phone, I love to sit back and be entertained with the spoken word.  And I like an ExOfficio shirt with 2 pockets (one for passport, tickets etc and one for my smartphone).

What about you?  What indulgence makes a flight that much better?

My kindle, and the knowledge that I have a bag of dried fruit and nuts in my bag for emergencies. The emergencies happen so seldom that the current bag has made 3 transatlaantic trips since I gave away the previous one to a friend who was headed for the airport...

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations

It's interesting how electronics have changed how we live, isn't it?

PHeymont, I liked the kind of snacks you do but a lot of countries completely disallow any type of produce to be taken into their homeland.  Usually if it's processed, it's okay, but just dried I'm not sure about.  Have you run into troubles with this?

New Zealand especially has hefty fines.  Can't even bring a dozen eggs from USA into Canada or visa versa.

Haven't had a problem with it. These are the kind of bags you buy at airport newstands at extraordinary prices, or in supermarkets for a lot less. It's possible that someone may have a rule, but since no one has ever asked or warned (except the U.S.)....

Having been the recipient of one of PHeymont's emergency bags of dried fruits and nuts,I can assure everyone I ate it on my trip! Running out of stuff happens a little more frequently to me on trips!

If you want a thing done, ask a busy man.
