Well, I didn't expect anyone to twig it quite that fast, and it's not just because of a polar route. Billionaires are made, not born. Mr. Ellison seems to be making a business move - pressure the FAA to make things difficult for Hawaiian air, upgrade the Island Air service, achieve sole "Ohana" certification for Island Air. Well, it's worth noting that Hawaiian has still not gotten Ohana off the ground, literally. They're citing FAA's cutbacks due to sequestration and then the shutdown as the reason. Island Air used to be a Hawaiian affiliate, flying Dash-8s and ATR-42s into small airports and feeding passengers into Hawaiian. Ohana was/is their plan to stay in that market with ATR42s. Island is unhappy with its ATRs (both the 42 and the larger 72), but doesn't seem to be able to solve any of its problems. I...

I have never been all that interested in Hawaii (so why am I going you ask?) but your blog and photos have begun to pique my curiosity. Thank you. The "Yellowstone" hot spot has migrated over the past thousands of years from eastern Oregon, across southern Idaho and now sits right under Yellowstone National Park. Actually the hot spot hasn't move at all, the earth's places move away from the hot spot, but it's just another way of thinking about it. I'd be careful about being around an active volcano but don't mind hanging around places like this or much of the Hawaiian...

Yet another step in the complete dehumanization of the flying experience. Every airline faces this challenge and deals with it successfully, yet only Finnair and Hawaiian Air need to weight people like they're freight. Shame on them. I had no plans to fly Finnair, all the more now when I read of their corporate mentality.

I'm old enough to remember the Vegas Years, although was too young at the time to go see Elvis in Vegas. Fans always commented that Elvis was at his best in Vegas -- relaxed, chatty (talking to the crowd a lot), and despite it's large size, it was a fairly intimate performance venue with lots of direct audience contact. I like having a desk in my hotel room. A sofa or easy chair would work, but I dislike working in bed. I hope we're given some options.

Any idea how long the island is going to be closed? I'd hope to visit Lanai in about 2 years. Must be nice to buy your own Hawaiian Island -- and interesting to see if this "green" scheme will work. Lanai has limited resources, except for lots of sunshine a great weather.

Don't worry, Garry. These chickens are far from being endangered. Their direct relatives (look just like them) are wandering in large numbers all over the Hawaiian islands. Here they are pursued for the pot. But they replenish so quickly that's not a problem. Only two kinds of chickens in the UK? -- I'd always thought it was roosters and hens. But the concept of fresh and frozen is interesting. Wonderful how those would mate?

It is a great photo! Aussie culture sounds a lot like Hawaiian culture. When work in Honolulu ends, there is a massive migration of youngsters and their surfboards to Waikiki. Here the waves are a lot more predictable because of the coral reefs, but the enthusiasm for the water sounds very similar.
