Hotel desks disappearing in mobile age

As traveler's habits evolve, so does the hotel room. Over the past few years we've seen chains develop suite solutions, create super-economy bed-in-a-box hotels and more. Now some chains are pulling out the traditional desk from many hotels, especially mid-price chains with business travelers.

Surveys and observation have shown that once wireless eliminated the need to sit at a desk and be tethered to a phone or ethernet cable, guests moved to the comfortable bed or chair with a laptop or tablet. Even more drifted down to the lobby or the bar to work in a more social atmosphere.

For the hotels, that's a winning move. By eliminating the desk, they not only save on furniture costs, but can build rooms that are a little smaller but look bigger. Many still retain some horizontal space that can be used for work, but it's usually quite small.

Among the chains going that way are Hilton's new Tru brand and Red Lion's Hotel RL. Marriott isn't going that far yet, but a company vice-president told USA Today that “We are really not eliminating desks, but evolving work surfaces into a new guestroom design that appeals to consumer behaviors,” he says. “It is about having purposeful, flexible work surfaces in the room that prompt focused work or relaxing work.”
