I suspect the background is real. I have never been to Hawaii, and remembering from a long time ago the opening credits of the TV series Hawaii 50, I wonder if this could be a carved bow of a canoe from there or some other Pacific Island..

Perhaps the most famous member of the Bowes-Lyon family was one born just a few years after the family stopped living at Gibside. Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, born in 1900, was the ninth (of ten) daughters of the 14th Earl, married the future King George VI, and then Queen Elizabeth the "Queen Mum."

I empathize with your rainy, muddy experience. That is no fun. As I recall, Kitty Hawk is also very windy, one of the reasons the Wright brothers chose it. They knew if they could fly their plane into the wind for some distance, no one could challenge the fact that they had flown a heavier than air machine. It's a beautiful hike, Whitney! I dislike the heat and humidity of New Orleans' summer, but this time of year sounds inviting and it's obviously charming! And while it's cold, winter is also beautiful. Here's a photo from my favorite place to hike, a 1 minute walk from my home, Fish Creek Provincial Park. We hike here along the Bow River in all four seasons, including winter. Snow slows you a little but it's not that deep as a rule. If it gets icy, you use microspikes.

You have sharp eyes PHeymont! The third and fourth pictures are taken from the Crescent Hights, a small hill on the North bank of the Bow River. In the Calgary downtown core area, there are three bridges (tow for pedestrians and cyclists; one for cars) connecting the skyscrapers on the South bank and residential areas on the North bank of the river. The peace bridge is out of the picture 3 frame and in all other 3 pictures.

The bridge on the bottom right of the picture 3 is called Bow River Pathway. It's a pedestrian/cycling bridge connecting the downtown ore - Prince's Island Park - The North bank of Bow river. The Peace bridge and C-train bridge are further west! Ha Ha Karl, you need get out more

This bridge is neat. When Evan and I were doing our walkabout through downtown and then to the university we crossed the Bow and headed west. A couple of minutes later we came across this bridge and experienced some crosser's remorse at our previous choice of bridge.

Thanks for the note, TravelandNature! AeroMexico has pretty regularly scheduled flights into La Paz, though through Mexico City, so you'll have to connect. Worth checking major search engines like Expedia or Kayak, though, because it is a rather long drive, though I enjoy the desert scenery of Baja California.

I first visited Cannery Row in 1964, on a trip from the Bay Area in my '53 Plymouth with friends, going to the Monterey Folk Festival. Thanks for the comment, PortMoresby. I am not fond of places badly decayed, but it would be nice to have more of the original cannery scenario still in place, instead of all the tourist traps. Agree about the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It's not to be missed, but was omitted from this piece because it didn't exist in John Steinbeck's time.
