Re: Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu (Where Gumbo Was #230)

GarryRF ·
On my last visit to Diamond Head we left near to the closing time. A large Limousine was waiting to take us back to Waikiki. I hadn't ordered one but the driver insisted we used him to take us back. "I will charge you the same as the Taxi fare you paid to get here" Sounded like an offer too good to refuse ! Before we arrived back in Waikiki another 4 couples had joined our Taxi ride. Had to admire the driver for ingenuity. Very good earner !

Re: Gallery: Signs of Waikiki

DrFumblefinger ·
Signs of the Modern Culture, indeed, Garry. Waikiki is about as new a neighborhood as you'll find in any major city. There are no old man-made artifacts or structures here. How long will it last? Like most modern culture, it likely will keep evolving trying to keep up with the times. Old places torn down to be replaced with newer structures. Re: Mar. 26, 2016: Waiting for the big one...

DrFumblefinger ·
It is a great photo! Aussie culture sounds a lot like Hawaiian culture. When work in Honolulu ends, there is a massive migration of youngsters and their surfboards to Waikiki. Here the waves are a lot more predictable because of the coral reefs, but the enthusiasm for the water sounds very similar.

Re: Indoor Farmers Market at Hyatt Regency, Waikiki

Paul Heymont ·
This market is a really interesting idea, especially since visitors in resort areas sometimes end up eating only what's served, and don't visit local markets. In Hawaii, where there are so many different fruits we don't see in the rest of the U.S., that's especially a shame!

Hi there Pheymont. It was really interesting and different. I actually work with someone here in CO who has an aunt that works at the hotel next door to the Hyatt. While visiting with her, she told us she usually grabs some fresh fruit and veggies every week. She says it is much better than at the store. Look forward to going the next time we are in the area. Thanks for your comment.

The 32-story, 1641-room hotel was originally constructed in 1986 as The Peabody Orlando. I remember well when all traffic stopped on International Drive to allow the Ducks the time to cross the street safely - then enter the Duck pond inside the Hotel.

No - I wasn't looking for a Motel DrF !! Just a clue to the country. But I did get to ride in a limousine back to Waikiki from the mountain. Long story.
