There are probably a million miles of hiking trails in north America alone. But not many of them are this well groomed, with borders on the side of the path, smooth surface or well made wooden handrails where it seems none are needed. Ferns imply a shaded moister setting. This looks like some kind of urban park to me, not a wilderness park. PHeymont is an east coast guy, although he gets around a lot. I don't hike there, but who knows east coast hiking trails around here?

Well, the photo does very much look east coast...deciduous trees, open canopy. The trail is also very well maintained...and looks like one of the photos in Pheymont's Portland Maine blog. Given that I am going to say that it is on the Rachel Carson national wildlife interpretive trail...

Welcome, Gulliver, and two weeks will give you a nice break. I'm not sure where you're traveling from. Easiest and cheapest place for a warm break from North America is to head south, especially to Florida or the Caribbean, or from the West coast to Hawaii or Arizona. But the south of Europe is also quite nice this time of year. Italy, Sicily, Greece are places I'd consider going, depending on what interests you and where you've traveled before. Malta is less than 200 miles from the coast of Africa. It has a winter climate that is absolutely perfect. Its summer climate can be extremely hot. Christmas in Malta is amazing. The locals wearing their furs and heavy coats. And its still between 70 and 80f !

The spelling of "Harbor" indicates the US, and the angle of the sun suggests the southern half. I suspect if it were California, there are Travel Gumbo bloggers who would have recognised it by now. There is a flag with a single star - could this be an old version of the flag of Texas? So what about the Texas coast somewhere?

In that part of the coast, it's more likely to have been artichokes, grown there and all the way down to Salinas/Monterey. Avocados are a Southern California crop.

When I lived in So California, an acquaintance was an avocado farmer. He informed us that at the time about 10% of the avocado crop was stolen each year -- probably higher now. The most stolen crop in America, and impossible to trace I love old lighthouses and their setting on the roughest places on the coast. Thanks for sharing this one with us, PM.

MAD, that's one of the most stunning pictures I've seen, and one of the best, I think, we've had as a Gumbo Picture of the Day. The subject itself, and the shading of light and surface, remind me of the Impressionists' paintings along the Normandy coast. Thanks for sharing!

I almost made it to Corfe Castle once, walking the SW Coast Path, but ran out of steam in Weymouth. That path almost killed me and I decided I was old enough to declare old age and settle for level walks along rivers and canals. And a lesson in paying attention to the spacing of those wiggly lines on the map that warn us of climbs and descents. In any case, between the re-enactors and your pictures, I think this visit is even better. Thanks so much, Mac.

"Challenge" is an understatement. The coast is beautiful but I think there are less cruel ways to enjoy it. I do recommend, however, the section between Seaton and Lyme Regis, the Undercroft of 'French Lieutenant's Woman' fame. Where the land has slipped toward the sea and a jungle has grown up on it, very different from the rest. And Lyme Regis at the end, one of my favorite towns.

Travelling Buzz- I really like Bulgaria and sometimes crave the plain yogurt sweetened with honey that you get there. As far as the Black Sea ,it really reminds me of the US's Gulf Coast. Costs are lower and the beaches are great for swimming I'm anxious to hear more from you about Bulgaria's UNESCO sights ! Welcome to TG! We are glad you are part of the community!

I do not believe that the burning of fossils fuels has any effect on the direction of the Jet Stream. Which in turn controls the weather around the world. I do believe that the Petro-Chemical Refineries from the New Jersey coast and further south releasing tons of nasty unwanted chemicals into the atmosphere does have a big effect on the de-forestation of Europe with acid rain. I took a walk once along the SW Coast Path, Exmouth to Weymouth, over several days and saw a wonderful variety of English seaside towns and countryside. Unfortunately, obviously, for me, I caught a bus on the edge of Weymouth and stayed instead in Dorchester. Although a very nice town (nice walk to Hardy's Cottage), I see now what I missed. A perfect excuse, as if I needed one, to go back. Thanks Mac.

Hi, Yes, that is exactly the route we planned to get there, though the trip will actually begin in San Diego this time and be preceded by a trip up the U.S. west coast. But coming back, we are thinking of going to Calgary then dropping all the way down to Montana and Wyoming, and heading back to San Diego via Las Vegas, where we have family.
