Re: Whom did you say was flying this plane?

FlashFlyer ·
Anyone remember the movie Westworld? Where nothing can go wrong...go wrong....go wrong... I'm okay with the pilot using automation, but the idea of automation REPLACING the pilot....nah... I want someone who can grab the controls and fly by the seat of his or her pants, not have the plane crash because some tiny part shorted out. Same goes for robot cars on the highway. I don't wanna get killed head-on by a car reacting to a sunspot in GPS. OTOH if you could get government on autopilot...oh,...

Boeing is really big up here in Seattle. I know they make great planes. But like FlashFlyer said, things can go really wrong and I'd just feel better knowing there's someone in the cockpit besides a robot.

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo #209

George G. ·
Robots are the theme today for Friday’s WITW clues. Do you know who they are and where they might be on display? Do you know the word 'robot' was first used to denote a fictional humanoid in a 1920 play R.U.R. by the Czech writer, Karel Čapek but it was Karel's brother Josef Čapek who was the word's true inventor. Easier clues coming tomorrow, so standby....

Re: A day ago, driverless cars. Are you up for no-pilot jetliners?

DrFumblefinger ·
I wonder how they'll psychologically profile the robotic drone pilots? I don't think commercial aviation is ready for pilotless planes. Most of us like to know that there's a human in there who can take control if the robot malfunctions in some way. Perhaps in a generation, that will change as travelers who are more used to machines become the #1 travel demographic.

Re: California cops: How do you ticket a driverless car?

Paul Heymont ·
My all-day question about this has been answered. I couldn't figure out how the cop stopped the car—does the car have a blue-light sensor? Did they have to call Google? etc. A friend found another article that clarified that the (non)driver is able to take over and stop and steer the car; Google has now come to an agreement with the police that if he notices traffic backing up behind him, the (non)driver will now pull over and let it pass. So there goes another dream job...riding around all...
