Thanks for the trip, PortMoresby, it looks like a fascinating place to visit. Those Romans certainly knew how to build a city..

I love walking through markets - the smells, the colours and the rare fruits that don't make it to the Supermarkets! And sometimes the samples of local cheese ! I could spend all day there.

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 4, 2014: Frutta Fresca, Roma

PortMoresby ·
No market here, just this free-standing kiosk on the sidewalk in the location I described, which is why it's such a surprise. Nothing else around it except a busy street and landscaping which you can see on the left of the photo. No cheese, just a Colosseum.

Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? 21.0

DrFumblefinger ·
So far we've only had one stab at the solution, by member Andredeya ( Florida- Miami Design Preservation League- Beach Patrol Headquarters Building). Appreciate the effort, Andredeya, but that is not the correct solution. So I'm offering up two additional clues today: This is a view of the interior of the hotel, again with strong nautical influence And this is the view south from the hotel's pool. The next piece of real estate to the south is Antarctica. So, where in the world is Gumbo?

You can be sure it never would have made it to this page if it was bad. It was delicious. I never eat sweet in the morning so this was perfect for me and a something I'd never had before.

Re: Where Gumbo Was #11: The Arena of Arles and the World of Rome

PortMoresby ·
The remains of Rome are great to see, it cannot be denied, but it's those lovely little bridges that will be the target when I go to Arles. And I will, no doubt. The village within the walls reminds me of the "anfiteatro" in Lucca Italy. It was filled by houses until the 19th century when it was cleared, leaving the ring of buildings on the perimeter and creating the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. I had the good fortune of renting a large apartment in the perimeter ring of buildings, overlooking...

When you get to Arles, you may want to look at another bridge, this one crossing the Rhone. The clip below is from this website , which also has several other side-by-side comparisons of his paintings and today. The bridge here is modified or replaced, but the steps and the walk along the Rhone have not. And here's another image from my visit, looking down the Canal d'Arles from near the Langlois Bridge (the official name of the "Van Gogh Bridge.")

Agreed. Interestingly, Roma did not leave me with a good impression during our first visit in 1980. However, after returning many times, it becomes a more meaningful place for me to enjoy. Now, we take pleasure in just walking the streets, stopping when we decide to linger, and generally hanging out in its diverse neighborhoods. During our trip in May we found some new restaurants, walked familiar neighborhoods from different directions, and discovered new gelatorie to continue our...

Re: Tips on Getting FF Seats.

Paul Heymont ·
That's good advice in her column! I've often had success calling back when I didn't get the "right" answer the first time helps...and the night shift often has the most experienced agents. Other useful tips, aside from being the most pleasant if sadly disappointed customer they've had all day: Plan early, book early. If you really want to fly to Paris in late July on the cheapest FF tickets, your best bet is late August: the airlines generally open seats 330 days ahead, and if you can be...
