Italy launches nationwide Wi-Fi app

Italy is offering residents and visitors an app that lets them sign in once and then be automatically connected to free Wi-Fi hotspots all over the country, without signing in each time.

Wi-Fi Italia, sponsored by the Ministries for Economic Development and Culture, has been launched in several areas, including tourist-popular Rome, Bari, Milan, Trento, Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, and will soon spread to the rest of the country. It's available in Italian and English on the PlayStore and iPhone's App Store.

The service links users to free Wi-Fi provided by towns, transit systems, train stations, public buildings and hotels, and may eventually include more. The aim of the app is, the ministries say, to simplify life for locals and tourists. The Culture Ministry also plans to use anonymous data to "improve Italy's cultural offerings."
