Re: Where in the World is Gumbo? #7.0

WorkerBee ·
It's the capitol building. Well, not THE capitol building but A capitol building. One of fifty scattered around the United States. One with a dome. One in which the building is very similar to THE capitol building in Washington, D.C. Gumbo is in Salt Lake City standing in front of the Utah State Capitol building!

Re: And the tallest US building goes to?

The judges have chosen the "fairest in the land". I would be happy to tour both buildings. The ingenuity of architects and engineers never ceases to impress me. Some buildings that I have particularly enjoyed touring - the World Trade Center and the Rockefeller Center in NY, the dome of St. Peter's in Rome, all of St. Paul's in London, the Reichstag in Berlin and all of the small historical buildings at Greenfield Village, Michigan.

I guess it's time for another clue. After entering the above door and walking into a foyer which has the magnificent dome illustrated previously, Gumbo enters one of many rooms. Here's part of one of them.... Does this help you figure out where Gumbo is?

Nature has so many works of art that sometimes you need to stop and breath. Like so many photographers of nature - you need a keen eye to capture that precious moment. I once found that perfect scene and took a photo of each member of the family standing in for a "Portrait Picture" Until I was asked by a group of maybe 20 people to move along ! I'd started a Kodak Moment where there was just a passing glance 20 minutes ago !

This is the Sea-Based X-Band Radar dome, there was a big to do when it was moved. I can't tell where the pic was taken though. The dome was in Seattle for a spell but then relocated.

Ottoman ·
Ah yes...I have been to this place. Nice pics DrFumblefinger. Your first photo threw me for a loop, for I don't remember a sphinx being at this location. But when I saw the other photos, like the lobby shot with the huge staircase containing statues of two large animals (?? bison), and especially the exterior shot with a figure on the top dome...looks like a golden boy....hmmmmmmmm.

I'm confused about the photo with the candle, but the photo on the first page of the building with the gold-leaf dome is the Secessionist Building in Vienna. Best regards, Jude Bell

I like this memorial, especially at night time, when the bronze figure of Jefferson really stands out against the light colored dome. Thanks, Ottoman!

Okay, it is hard to see what is in the dome, but the art work outside the dome is definitely civil and not religious. There is a seascape in one corner. So Spain or Portugal are my first guesses.

Re: Leaning Towers: It's Not Just About Pisa!

Jonathan L ·
The Olympic Tower in Montreal was built, among other reasons to house an observation deck (which it still has) and the mechanism for a retractable roof to the stadium next door. This was because the stadium was home to the Montreal Expos and weather in Montreal in April can be a little chilly. Unfortunately the retractable roof never worked (I think it was tried once and jammed) and they had to convert it to a closed dome.
