A colorful and very captivating travel story. Everything from land formations, cuisine, architecture, and wildlife. It wasn't lost on me while engaged in your story on the remoteness of your explorations. Disaster could have befallen you anywhere and no cell towers, but you explained how you were well prepared and took great precautions. Very well written and photographed. Did you have many photos of the local people and their native architecture after colonialism?

Our son and his family live in the beautiful rural Jutland Peninsula of Denmark. Though Denmark is still one of the safest countries in the world, they have seen a dramatic rise in criminal activity by immigrant gangs, so no matter where you travel, you should always be cognizant of your surroundings.

I'm not sure how it can be said with any degree of certainty that data "scraped" from the site indicate anything close to real data other than, for instance, general availability, rather than which days a property is actually booked. Hosts, including me, block days (weeks, months) when the accommodation is used by family & friends or when they, like me, travel out of town. I'm not disputing that rules are broken but suspect it makes better news not bothering to dig through information to...

I think it may not be all that easy to divide the world into 'tourists' and 'travelers;' the world is not really that binary, and there are many shades between them. And many of those we meet are on the path to deeper experiences as they experience more and travel more. I think of the many new travelers who used to post on the Frommer forums about their desire to 'see as much as possible' and 'do as many countries as possible' in impossibly short time allowances. Thanks for commenting Travel Luver. They are called Katy. They were invented (?) in Sweden for cooler climates. Self pollinating, disease resistant and quite a heavy cropper. Its only a dwarf tree and only 2 years old - when I picked 9 apples. Count is around 40 now so who knows - next year maybe 100 ! I grow them in front of the kitchen window - always admired when visitors call.

I presume when they say "while on the road", they refer to the expenditure during travel. Accommodation, food, etc. might be included in the package - booked and pre-paid in China.

Re: TAP surprise winner in European airline numbers
BA have just withdrawn the lunchtime flight from Mumbai to London which we booked several months ago. They put us on one at 2:15 a.m. instead, which would have completely messed up our travel plans (both in India and back here). So, you can subtract 2 from their passenger numbers - we cancelled and re-booked with Jet Airways (who still have a lunchtime flight).

I think the important numbers would be how this compares to last year or the last five years. And while I agree most Americans don't take enough or long vacations ,I do think the travel industry in the US is doing better. The airlines have record profits and I know some states like Florida are showing record visitors the last few years including domestic travelers. I haven't seen the summer numbers yet, but as of June Florida's on pace for another record year. ...

Thanks for sharing these interesting photos and for bringing back memories. I was last in Jewel Cave in 1982, when there was much less known about how extensive a cave network it was. I found the beautiful rock formations to be absolutely fascinating! Travel Luver, I seem to recall that the cave was quite cool, but maybe Still Country Photo can elaborate for us. Also, I vaguely seem to recall that the last formation in your series of photos was called the "Bacon Strip" or something similar?

Never had a "Bucket List" I'm always intrigued when some one makes a find - that's not on everyone's list. I've recently heard that cruising the Baltic Sea is amazing. There's places to avoid and then there's "Must see's" in China. My travel list is constantly changing.

It's good to see the Elvis Legacy lives on. Does the "King" still have a following in America with younger people ? I'm amazed that younger visitors to Liverpool still want to see Beatles memorabilia. German, French, Japanese, Spanish and Scandinavian tourists and most under 40. Don't worry Travel Luver ! No animals were harmed in the making of this film. You have to wait in the Bar until the "All clear" sounds in a storm ! But it actually caused no damage at all. It's fitted with a lightening rod to take the current to earth. Like all tall buildings.

This one baffles me too. In the corner of the first picture, the architecture looks Tibetan. But the rest? No. Looks like the building is crushing human figures or Western civilization. Hell realms. Yes, HistoryDigger, it is time to spill all because Lynn Miller figured it out (good for you, Lynn!) Please remember that these puzzles could be from anywhere in the world and rarely does one logically follow another in sequence. De Toqueville comes to mind, and others after. Of course, these books all had a point of view! I happened to travel to Europe in 2010 fairly soon after air traffic was started back up and there were a lot of hotel bargains to be had whole summer as many people canceled in advance. Then I traveled again in May of 2011 and another volcano disrupted some traffic for a few days and similar bargains were out there.

There can be an up side to travel during an eruption. My plans proceeded during the 2010 eruption and the first result was a southern route to Rome and a spectacular view of the Pyrenees, flying parallel to them. After arrival in Rome I immediately booked sleeper compartment tickets from Budapest to London (already had Rome-Budapest), to replace the flight I'd booked.
