How cold is this winter? Niagara Falls has frozen over!

PHeymont ·
With temperatures down at times to minus double-digits, and day after day of extreme cold, Niagara Falls has frozen solid.   It's not the first time it's happened, but it's not a regular event, either. So...don't plan a winter honeymoon at The...

Outside Pietermaritzburg City Hall, South Africa is a Naval gun from the British Royal Navy Ship HMS Fawn. After the ship ran aground in 1850 the gun was relocated to its current location. It was fired to announce 1 O'clock to the surrounding town. A visiting dignitary asked how the time was kept to ensure its accuracy. "We have a telescope that looks into the local clockmakers shop. He has a 100 year old Belgian clock in the window that is famous for keeping perfect time" So the wealthy...

Re: Niagara Falls: Pretty much the complete guide

DrFumblefinger ·
A nice summary of an amazing place! Basically the water of the great lakes flows over this precipice -- but actually just half the water. Ontario Hydro diverts the other half of the water for electricity production and to reduce the rate of erosion of the precipice. The town itself is very touristy, but after you've visited the falls I'd recommend leaving town and exploring some of the Niagara Peninsula. Great orchards and vineyards, small towns, like Niagara-on-the-Lake, and one of my...
