Sadly, that $4K isn't going to go a real long way in UK...it's a pretty expensive place. You'll need to find seriously cheap lodging and really mind your pence! If you're not really stuck on UK, you might look at other places where English will do, including Jamaica and Puerto Rico or even Guyana. If UK is really IT, though, you should look into hostel costs, and into sharing sites like couchsurfing.com. Depending on when you're going, you might find some luck with college spaces that are...

Flying is safer than crossing the Street ! More accidents happen at home in the Bathroom than anywhere else! Its just very unlucky for your co-workers - who are just jealous !

Yes, the co-workers are jealous. When you return, unless you bring really good swag, they will not want to hear one word about your trip. Spoil sports. The best strategy is to pick out of the ordinary destinations. When I tell them where I am going and the response is " Where ??? What ? Where is that ? ", I know that I am on the right track.

This is from summer of 2013. The disappearance of public smoking in Europe is slow and uneven; when the picture was taken, it was still allowed on the open terrace of the cafe. This summer, in England, I was surprised to note how much it persists there.

In fewer and fewer places, Garry. Not in parks, not within a specified distance of building doorways (to keep the smell and butts away from tenants, pupils, etc.) and not in outdoor cafes.

While it seems a novelty, it is also a necessity. Japan has an imploding population and doesn't have enough workers to fill all its job requirements. Rather than import foreigners to do the work (aside from key spots like education), as the western countries are doing, they have decided to cope in their own way which includes more automation and increased use of robotics. They prefer to retain their nationality and culture more than they want the extra hands. It will be interesting to see...

Another walk down memory lane! I lived in Puerto Rico for 5 years and remember it fondly. Occasionally I'd drive past Ron Bacardi but I regret I never stopped to take the tour. Not unusual, I'm sure, when we have the feeling there's always time later. An interesting name out that direction which will likely ring bells for New Yorkers, not far beyond the Bacardi Distillery, if driving from San Juan, is Levittown, a place name I always found incongruous there. Part of the post-WWII affordable...

Las Cavernas was one of the first places I went to on my first trip to Puerto Rico. Back then the Autopista (expressway) was not yet complete and it was closer to 3 hours each way. But the caverns were on of the reason I fell in love with isalnd.

The Aussies have everything that we have in the UK. Full of Brits. Mostly second generation. Vegemite is just the same as Marmite. A touch sweeter and now produced by the World Dominating KRAFT Co. Kraft also bought out a few English Brands and shifted production to Spain and Holland. Demolished the Factory with undue speed ! Don't you just hate it when that happens !!

I don't know much about Germany's import taxes, but there may be taxes on certain classes of merchandise beyond and in addition to VAT. For example, in one country I know of, importing a car is associated with a tax of 100% of the value of the car. And after that, you also pay VAT.

As an even earlier 8th street walker (from the early 60s on) I also remember the wonderful 8th Street Bookshop, and numbers of artisan leather and jewelry shops...it was where you went for sandals...sad now, but nice to see Washington Square alive again, even if somewhat sanitized...
