San Diego-Tijuana: Like a bridge over troubled borders...

Paul Heymont ·
At a time when border crossings are getting harder in many places, they just got easier at a pair of airports, right across the border and road from each other on the U.S.-Mexico border. By a happy accident, San Diego and Tijuana have twin airports facing each other, and now they have a bridge connecting them, allowing U.S. passengers to fly to many Mexican destinations by crossing the road; at the same time, Mexicans heading for U.S. cities can change planes to fly from San Diego. The key...

Happy Birthday, Finland—your present is a mountain!

Paul Heymont ·
It's not yet a done deal, but a campaign to give Finland a mountain as a gift on the 100th anniversary of its independence is gaining support in Norway. Norway has lots of mountains; Finland is mostly flat. On their common border, Halti rises to 1365 metres, not even one of the top 200 in the country...but one of it spurs, over 40 meters lower, is the highest point in Finland. The proposal, which now has the support of the Norwegian Mapping Authority, would shift the border 20 meters to put...

Sweden's new border checks set to snarl rail traffic

Paul Heymont ·
Sweden's plan for mandatory ID checks at borders, designed to reduce the flow of refugees seeking asylum, is about to have an unintended consequence: reducing service and snarling travel across the Oresund bridge between Sweden and Denmark. As a response to the controls, to take effect on January 4, SJ, Sweden's national rail operator, is cancelling all cross-border service to Denmark in order not to take on responsibility for the ID checks, and Skanetrafiken, which operates the commuter...

Interesting tale, Rob. Sorry that you had to leave Vivie behind. I did two 14 day quarantines this past year and know someone who had to do six of them. What a waste of productive time. Never again.

In our case, I'm very grateful. We had to jump through a lot of hoops but we managed to see each other during most of the pandemic. But I've heard so many heartbreaking stories. Couples that can't see each other. Divorced parents who can't see their kids . Mother's that can't see their sons. The list goes on. Not to mention all the jobs losses in the border towns and property owners who are going to have to deal with houses left vacant for 2 years. I think Canada will start to open up soon...

Garry - In this case, everyone was nice. And as a positive, I got to see a glimpse of Maine . I think I have a better understanding of how the border communities view each other as one. Prime Minister Trudeau quoted President Reagan before calling the US-Canada border “a meeting place, rather than a dividing line.” Hope it gets back to that.
