I know what you mean. Maligne Lake is a beautiful area to see and the tour out to Spirit Island is certainly worth it. One of the most notable things about the lake is the colour of the water itself that is due to being glacier fed. Up there this past June and was treated to a young moose feeding along the water near the boat launch and then two young black bears dining along the cutline just off the main road. Some beautiful photos, Ottoman! I'm fond of black sand beaches because you only find them in places with active volcanoes, and I love volcanoes. White sand beaches are generally formed from the breakdown of coral (often by parrotfish, who eat it and clear the fine particles out the other end). This beach isn't that large, but the black sand is striking. And the turtles -- how lovely they are. They look soooo relaxed. Makes me want to take a nap in that warm sand, too!

You'd love the Canary Isles. Volcanic islands off the north west cost of Africa. Its a winter hotspot where the islands belong to Spain. Its party time all year and a favourite with the younger set. Its famous on Tenerife for young men to drive up Mount Teide in winter and collect snow from the peak in Cooler Boxes. Drive back down to the 77'f / 25'c beaches and throw snowballs at the topless sunbathers. Might be a bit too much for non-Europeans !!

GarryRF -- I think non-Europeans can also enjoy the sight of sunbathers being pegged by snowballs! The first hit, especially, must be quite enjoyable as the injured party wonders "where did that cold hard thing come from"?

Hi DrFumblefinger and Garry RF Thanks for the feedback. DrFumblefinger, you are so right about the relaxed turtles. If time would have permitted, I would've joined them for a nice nap. GarryRF, I have copied and pasted your comment into my "things to do" folder. I think I'll fit in quite nicely at Tenerife, for living in the Great White North (aka Canada) has given me a lot of practice at becoming a snowball sharpshooter.

I've only experienced one total solar ecclipse in my life and it was very memorable. I'd like to see at least one more in my life time. Thanks for the guide on future dates. There's actually one going across North America in 2 years, so might focus on getting as close to that as possible.

My first Grandchild will be 1 year old on March 20th next week. The party venue has been booked for a 10am start. Then all outside at 10.30 for the eclipse. That will keep all the kids happy. But it took some planning ! My first total eclipse was in the Dom Rep. years ago. I was on a sun lounger. It went dark. It went cold. All the ants and creepy crawlies of the night came out. Thousands of them ! Very memorable.

On our recent trip to Sicily, our GPS took us down a farm road that dead-ended, except for a rugged dirt tract that was unsafe to drive in a car (doable in a 4 wheel drive vehicle). The GPS instructed me to continue down the dirt track, but as a human being I declined the machine's advice. Good thing I did, because as we looped back we could see that even the dirt track dead-ended in a mile or so. On our one trip to Hawaii, we ate in a few top-shelf listed-in-food-mags places, but in the end, my only real culinary memories of Hawaii are all the plate lunches and one incredible loco moco in Hilo... Thanks for bringing back pleasant memories!

Tenerife is an all year resort and has its peak season around Christmas. One of the rituals on Christmas Day is driving up Mt Teide in a rental Jeep. Take a couple of cooler box's and fill them with fresh snow. Drive back to Playa de las Americas and have a snow ball fight on the sunny 75'f beach with the sunbathers. Something that leaves a lasting memory of Christmas Day.

Beautiful Christmas Tree indeed. Best I've seen since the NYPD chased me with night stick raised in 2002. In Rockefeller Center when they switched on the Christmas lights. Memorable as the best ever Tree Display. "You need to disperse that way Sir" - "Sorry Officer, but you've sent my wife and kids the opposite way " - " You'll do as I told you" - "No way - Watch me......."

If you're used to humidity, then it's not a problem. I've lived in the western half of North America my entire life where humidity is quite low and it is challenging to adjust to it. I've been told by people who moved from a dry to humid climate it takes about a year to fully make the adjustment.
