Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, September 25, 2014: Statue of Elvis Presley, Westgate Las Vegas Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada
I'm old enough to remember the Vegas Years, although was too young at the time to go see Elvis in Vegas. Fans always commented that Elvis was at his best in Vegas -- relaxed, chatty (talking to the crowd a lot), and despite it's large size, it was a fairly intimate performance venue with lots of direct audience contact. (Watch the video all the way to the end to see the audience) The statue was unveiled by Barron Hilton just outside the showroom where Elvis performed, and it stood there for...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, May 3, 2014: Metropole Hotel, Hanoi
My daughter was in Vietnam a year ago on her honeymoon DrF. She would visit the local Churches - as these were often pieces of exquisite architecture. On occasions outside Christian Churches she would recognise the tune of a Hymn - and while staying outside - she would sing along ! Yes - I know - a little crazy and religious too ! Communist countries don't outlaw religion, its just tolerated. The Cathedral of Notre Dame in Ho Chi Minh City. (Photo by my daughter) She has a list of good and...

Re: Our Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, Austria - Part Two
I took my wife on the Sound of Music tour from the old Chiemsee Armed Forces Recreation Center when the US Army occupied it. I remember on our bus as we drove away, the guide wanted us to show hands of who saw it just once, and went through the numbers to see who saw it the most. She never asked who never saw it which was only me. Still haven't seen it. Everyone ooohed and aaaahed when we arrived at the gazebo as I stood bewildered and I was the only one that didn't know the do-re-mi song...

Re: Romania-top 10 destinations of 2014
The best season to visit Romania is the Holiday Winter (for Christmas and New Year holiday). This is the best season in my opinion because we have a lot of traditions especially for Christmas, and you'll be very surprised by the guest's hospitality, especially in the rural places like Maramures, Bucovina, or Transilvania- Brasov, Sibiu county. In Brasov county for exemple is a tradition for Christmas where 2 groups of young men called "Feciorii" go and sing Christmas Carols all day for every...

Passionate About Road Trips? Take One On A Motorbike This Time!
Road trips. The answer to all your troubles. Well metaphorically at least. A journey that has a destination and ends at the end of the day with you tired out of your mind isn’t really the one that you would remember for the rest of your life. But if one day you decide to just get your car and drive along the coast for a stretch of 200km for no reason, only because you felt like it, then that my friend is the day you will want to remember and put down in your journal for sure. Re: Visiting Cuba pt 3. + more cars - bikes - taxi - bus and some nice pix too.
I've discussed the travel issues with many American visitors. They all seem to be singing from the same page. "When I sing 'The land of the free' I mean it. No one tells me where I cant go" Its the US Treasury that says you cant support the Cuban economy. So if I paid for TravelRob then he could go. Same as you as a Canadian could pay for your wife. No where does it say "You cant go to Cuba" Most Cubans don't own a Computer. Remember this is a socialist country. Community centres are...

Re: Welcome to Ohio!
Toledo in Ohio is an interesting story. If I recall a program I once saw on how state lines were determined, Toledo was in Michigan territory but that was contested by Ohio. After a bloodless skirmish between the two, a deal was struck where Ohio got Toledo and Michigan was given most of the Upper Peninsula (The Mitten). Who got the best deal?
