Re: Gifts to bring back from Portugal or Barcellona

Paul Heymont ·
You might also consider not-handpainted tiles. The tiles you can see by the thousands on many buildings are available from building-supply or hardware vendors (drogaria) in many, many styles. Add some stick-on rubber bumpers to the back and you've got a practical--and cheap--Portuguese souvenir!

Re: Banksy Opens up a Bemusement Park in England

Mac ·
You guys are certainly mirroring all the thoughts that we had yesterday! I hope that my photos (taken in the drizzle) will come out to show you. The views that struck us immediately were the Dismaland logo above the entry (and on the souvenir T shirts), the Mickey Mouse ears worn by all the staff, the dilapidated, iconically-shaped, crumbling fairy tale castle with it's polluted moat - but perhaps the most dramatic is the centrepiece in the castle with the life-sized princess's pumpkin...

Re: Help with mobile phone for Morocco

PortMoresby ·
I have a Mobell (same company as Mobal) UK sim that I got years ago, very convenient, phone bills charged to my credit card, rather than having to keep track of the balance and "top up". However, calls are relatively expensive although I don't mind for the convenience and limited use when I'm in the UK. Knowing full well it would cost me, about a £ a minute because I was in Italy, I allowed a British friend who was meeting me in Italy to call me when she arrived using her UK phone and my UK...

Re: Where in the World is TravelGumbo? (#74)

Paul Heymont ·
This is like a movie scene, with the camera dollying out from the close-up! Well, at least we now know it's NOT a real lighthouse, but there's presumably water nearby..."Harbor House." Great...after all, how many seaside souvenir shops could there be?

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, October 18, 2014: Ponte Vecchio, Florence

rbciao ·
We've been to Florence many, many times and never tire of its amenities. The city will always have a special place in my heart because my oldest son was a souvenir of our last night there in 1980...Pensione Desiree on Via Fiume. When we returned to Florence in 1988 with two children we stayed at Pensione Desiree again. When I explained the circumstances to the owners, Ugo and his wife, she grabbed Tommy and gave him a big kiss. They fussed over us the entire time we were there. We went back...

Rome: Anti-tourist wall for Trevi Fountain?

Paul Heymont ·
Rome's war on 'bad behavior' by tourists and others has taken a new and controversial step forward with city council approval of a plan to put a one-metre-high glass and steel wall around the famed Trevi Fountain. That follows by about a month a plan to ban souvenir stands from major tourism sites, and by a year bans on sitting on or putting feet in the city's fountains. That especially applies to the Trevi, scene of a famous in-the-water encounter between Marcello Mastroianni and Anita...
