Whether landowners are in favor or not, public access to footpaths and other rights-of-way are protected by law in the UK in perpetuity. Any landowner who tries to fence them off or otherwise deny access will soon find an angry mob of activists helping them correct their "mistake". http://www.environmentlaw.org.uk/rte.asp?id=207 Lovely photo!

I love the pictures, Roderick. Part of what makes Waterton so special are its many wild animals. Almost like going on safari in America! I'm especially fond of the little bear. He looks so very lost without his mother. Hope you didn't get between her and the little one! And thanks for your first contribution to Travelgumbo!

Many couples like to re-affirm their vows after 25 years. Many older couples in England (and Wales) had a Wedding ceremony that was frugal because of circumstances. Plus - you can invite the Kids! It's a woman thing - means nothing to us men !

Re: GPS: 'Your destination will be...very wet.'

DrFumblefinger ·
On our recent trip to Sicily, our GPS took us down a farm road that dead-ended, except for a rugged dirt tract that was unsafe to drive in a car (doable in a 4 wheel drive vehicle). The GPS instructed me to continue down the dirt track, but as a human being I declined the machine's advice. Good thing I did, because as we looped back we could see that even the dirt track dead-ended in a mile or so. Somehow we made it to our next destination, although it's easy and expected to get lost a...

Re: Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Jan. 1st, 2015: Snowdonia National Park, Wales, UK

DrFumblefinger ·
I've only visited Snowdonia once, many years ago, and for too short a time. I recall having a nice hike and wanting to come back to do it again someday. I have yet to return. Maybe we'll need to head into the hills of Snowdonia together sometime, Garry. Although at a much slower pace than I would have done so 15 years ago!

GarryRF ·
Sounds like a plan DrF ! You can get the train to near the summit of Snowdon. It's a venture for days when the weather is 100% guaranteed not to catch you out. Many climbers have attempted the climb on sunny warm days and been trapped by spring snowfalls. Not too serious an outcome in these times of cell phones and helicopters. The Queen's grandson - Prince William - flew rescue missions in North Wales for the Royal Air Force.

Air shows were a regular part of my growing up years and I have a special place in my heart for biplanes. My father loved flying them so much he built himself one. He lives in memory, his plane flies on, now in Southern California. He made 1 trip to the UK in his lifetime, to see airplanes, of course. Thanks, Professor.

I was intrigued by the painted colors on the sheep in your photo. Looked it up to find fields are shared by many sheep farmers and the colors identify the farm to which they belong. Also, rams are outfitted with dye bags on their chest, so when they impregnate a ewe, a bit of the ram dye color can be seen on the ewe.
