I too am a fan of Colonial era hotels. The only ones I've ever stayed at were in Sri Lanka where, at the time, they weren't much more than a night at a Howard Johnson's. 22 April 2014. A British woman has been arrested and is facing deportation in Sri Lanka over a Buddha tattoo on her arm. Naomi Michelle Coleman, 37, was taken into custody at the airport in Colombo, after she arrived from India. That's an interesting link, GarryRF, because Sri Lankans tend to be pretty mellow about most things. Still, being disrespectful (or perceived as disrespectful) to Buddha is frowned on and not tolerated by the Sinhalese majority. As many know, it is considered very disrespectful to show too much skin in a Buddhist temple or shrine (no bare shoulders or legs). My daughter was in Vietnam a year ago on her honeymoon DrF. She would visit the local Churches - as these were often pieces of exquisite architecture. On occasions outside Christian Churches she would recognise the tune of a Hymn - and while staying outside - she would sing along ! Yes - I know - a little crazy and religious too ! Garry...it's fairly hard to think of someplace in Europe that's NOT near a famous battle...even some that took place in wars no longer famous. So, yes, the picture is from my teen years living in Europe, and a battle took place in the area, but a LOT longer ago than my time there...

I totally disagree with the list. It's partly because I'm more budget focused and partly because it takes less time and hassle at the smaller airports.My favorite airports are small ones where security is reasonable and you dont need to be there hours in advance. Right, time to stick my neck out (again...). I'm going for the picture being part of the world's biggest miniature railroad layout located in Nothlandz, Flemington, New Jersey. I have seen write ups for a large German layout but I think it is nowhere near as big or as complete as this! There PH! Shoot me down my friend!!

My favourite ones are: Voronet Monastery for its beautiful blue painting and the Black Church because is near my living place . About the Easter Holiday yes it is a wonderful time in my country, almost because we cook a lot of great and tasty food specific for this time of the year. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Its been several years since I have even been to Banff and I haven't been to the museum since the early 80s. It is a nice look at the old Banff before it exploded into the mass tourist site it is now. I will have to revisit the museum in the near future.

I know what you mean. Maligne Lake is a beautiful area to see and the tour out to Spirit Island is certainly worth it. One of the most notable things about the lake is the colour of the water itself that is due to being glacier fed. There's certainly a lot of variation, as I also noted above. And sometimes the planners don't help much either, as is the case with all three of our New York airports, where the whole AirTrain concept is completely botched. At Kennedy, the AirTrain's stations are not in, but sort of near, the terminals. That means you have to drag your stuff outside, across the roadways, and then up stairs or elevator to the train. Thanks for your comment, HistoryDigger. The tailing pond is relatively shallow and I don't believe is anywhere near as contaminated as the pit water. But I still wouldn't swim in it (not that you could, the entire area is sealed off except to workers) The pit water really is not accessible to anything except birds flying in, and hopefully their natural fear of flying into a hole would keep them away. There's enough rivers and lakes nearby that they have a lot of options -- not like trying to...

If Vegas relied on gamblers like us, none of those fabulous buildings would exist. I like Vegas in small doses. A long weekend is just about perfect, and usually then to meet with friends or family to catch up some. I agree the best stuff in Vegas is the free or near free, like the floral display at the Bellagio.

I think a lot of it is due to a bad economy. Many many working people out there are struggling and don't have spare funds to take a family on a trip. Travel for 4 people is often 3-4 x as expensive as travel for one person. And as PM points out, it's also a matter of priorities. To some folks vacation means going in style, like staying at an all inclusive luxury resort, not just camping. I'm actually curious if the 40% who said they didn't actually take vacation would even consider going...

Interesting. I work in San Francisco near the Ferry Building and frequently jaunt down to Pier 39 on my lunch break for exercise. Tourist alley, especially now that they have a new cruise terminal between the Ferry Building and Pier 39. Just today I nearly fell into a couple who stopped to take a picture of Coit Tower, speaking in an English accent. I moved on and got out of their way. 'Tis different when the shoe is on another foot, I suppose.

I once stayed at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California. It has all kinds of unusual room designs. Believe ours was jungle themed, but it was unusual and made for a fun stay. The Current River is amazing. It's around 185 miles, but in the area we were (in Salem) they do canoe trips as long as 65 miles or so. There are multiple canoe rental places near there, doing everything from short 4 hour canoe trips to multi-day camping canoe trips as well.

The Riveria was one of the oldest hotels remaining in Vegas and I'm not surprised that it's on the chopping block. I am a little surprised that the convention center is expanding that much. Many of the hotels in Vegas have their own (smaller) convention centers, in addition to the large center that is near the old Hilton hotel, so there seems to be no shortage of convention space in town. Always I wonder where they'll get the people to fill these places, but somehow they keep coming....

I like having a desk in my hotel room. A sofa or easy chair would work, but I dislike working in bed. I hope we're given some options.
