Re: 'Uncomfortable memory' tour faces Barcelona slave history

DrFumblefinger ·
It is good that a people face up to and learn from the past. We must learn from the lessons of history, but I do hope this will not become a "self-flagellation" exercise. At the end of the 18th century, everyone had slaves. Every people, every race, every culture, every country participated in the buying, selling and owning of other people. It was the norm. Fortunately, with a few rare exceptions, modern society has become enlightened and the rights of individuals is now a central focus of...

Re: 'Uncomfortable memory' tour faces Barcelona slave history

'Presentism' is always a danger for historians, but in this case, there's a real issue of interest based on the late-in-the-day entry into slave-owning by the later Catalan grandees; they went into it when all European countries had already abolished it, and when it had been abolished in many colonial areas. Sadly, not Cuba, Brazil, or, at the beginning of that period, the United States. One of the reasons it's important to consider these past things is because they do enter into the...

Re: 'Uncomfortable memory' tour faces Barcelona slave history

Slavery is just part of a long cruel history. Wherever there is chance to make money, people of any race or creed will gladly join in. Even the African warlords who sold the "prisoners" to the slave ships played their parts in this piece of history. Even today fortunes are made by sending young men to die in the name of "Defence". Money has no morals.

My main purpose in traveling is to see how things are done elsewhere. I try only observe and not overlay my personal opinion on what is there. After all, the point is to see and learn. Sometimes, as in this case, it can be hard to lay aside those personal feelings. The old custom does speak volumes about the importance to these people of tradition and structure in their lives. Thank you for the thought provoking photo.

The debate in Florida too is which city is actually the nations oldest. St Augustine claims it is because it's the oldest continuously occupied city by European settlers. Some in Pensacola, claim their city is because they were settled before St. Augustine.

One thing I wish St Augustine would do a better job is telling what role St Augustine played in the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King got arrested in St Augustine on June 11th 1964 after picketing. His charge was unlawful assembly and civil disobedience. Many people say events that summer helped sparked the Civil...

The building and grounds are remarkable for sure; when I visited the billiard room was in a bit of, er, faded grandeur. To be honest the staff presented a slightly misplaced hauteur, even rather stuffy, when dealing with a high end tour operator. I was always careful to send customers who would find al this good. Those of a more adventurous nature went elsewhere.

The food, as with all such Colonial establishments I've visited, is a mixture of western (English) food and local (Sri Lankan) dishes. For example, for breakfast you can pick from eggs, bacon, fried tomatoes or string hoppers, curries and rice.

DrF, I've noticed in my reading that many travelers to SL spend limited time or bypass Colombo entirely. Can you tell us, please, what you like about the city and, other than friends, what brought you back? If the hotel is as popular as it seems to be, there must be something. Or is the hotel itself the destination?

You guess correctly, PM, in that it was my friendship with Sir Arthur that kept me returning to Colombo. And what a wonderful experience that was -- imagine befriending and entering the private life of your favorite author! Hours of conversation over tea or juice while enjoying the setting sun and flying foxes, discussing his latest book, etc. Terrific! Colombo's a big city, over 7 million in a country of around 20 million, and has poor public transportation that will only get worse as roads...
