New cruises feature fall foliage, Colonial America

Princess Cruises is planning a raft of new cruise itineraries for the U.S. Northeast, starting in 2018, with two of its bigger ships sailing from New York.

It's not the usual kind of fall itinerary when many are starting to think "south" and "warm," but Princess says "We're excited to bring two of our newest ships to Canada and New England in 2018, so that more guests can enjoy the gorgeous fall foliage and famed destinations and landmarks in this region."

The two ships are Royal Princess and Regal Princess. They will sail on itineraries that include stops in northern cities such as Portland, Newport, Boston, Bar Harbor and Halifax, and will also include visits to the Bay of Fundy. Several cruises include Quebec.

Combined with off-ship opportunities to cruise up the Saguenay River, visit Niagara Falls, and colonial-era sites, it's quite a varied list. The capper is a 14-day cruise on Regal Princess that will position the ship for winter Caribbean cruises: a 14-night Canada and Colonial America cruise from Quebec to Fort Lauderdale, with stops in Port Saguenay (scenic cruising of the Saguenay River), Sydney (Cape Breton Island), Halifax, Saint John (for the Bay of Fundy), Bar Harbor (for Acadia National Park), Boston, Newport, New York and Norfolk (for Williamsburg and Jamestown).

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
