Re: Behind the Scenes: Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

DrFumblefinger ·
An interesting behind the scenes look, Lester. Thanks for sharing this. Do you know if this Academy building will be open to the public, or will it just be for members of the Academies and their invitees? As I recall, the current Academy building is mostly off limits except to Academy members.

Re: A Walk in Greenwich Village

Paul Heymont ·
As an even earlier 8th street walker (from the early 60s on) I also remember the wonderful 8th Street Bookshop, and numbers of artisan leather and jewelry shops...it was where you went for sandals...sad now, but nice to see Washington Square alive again, even if somewhat sanitized... The seemingly unstoppable expansion of NYU, like that of Columbia uptown, has changed the character of the area profoundly.

My first thought, looking at this morning's picture, was how much it has the feel of Impressionist painting, and in particular some of these scenes by Monet (above) and Pisarro (below). For fog, of course, no accident that two of them were painted in London!

These are great tips. i would add one more - make up business cards. They can say blogger or photographer, but they help when approaching people you want to photograph. It also gives you a way to offer to send a copy of your photo to your subject.

Couple more hints. Write down where you are taking the photos or learn how to save GPS / Geotags to your photos. This is handy when time passes and you are trying to remember where you took the photo. Biggest tip is to have a powerful telescopic lens to get far away closeups. If you don't have a tripod, brace yourself on a sturdy object for those big zoom shots, otherwise they maybe blurry.
