Like the photo, PHeymont, but am surprised to see cigarette butts in a cafe photo from Europe. Is this one from the archives.

This is from summer of 2013. The disappearance of public smoking in Europe is slow and uneven; when the picture was taken, it was still allowed on the open terrace of the cafe. This summer, in England, I was surprised to note how much it persists there.

If you smoke under the open sky in New York is it not permitted ?

In fewer and fewer places, Garry. Not in parks, not within a specified distance of building doorways (to keep the smell and butts away from tenants, pupils, etc.) and not in outdoor cafes.

I think PHeymont and DrFumblefinger are in cahoots today. The sandwich is made from the subject of "Where in the World". See the resemblence? Just picture it with sauce & frites.

I'd like to try not to. I suspect your tastes are more eclectic than mine!

As an even earlier 8th street walker (from the early 60s on) I also remember the wonderful 8th Street Bookshop, and numbers of artisan leather and jewelry shops...it was where you went for sandals...sad now, but nice to see Washington Square alive again, even if somewhat sanitized... The seemingly unstoppable expansion of NYU, like that of Columbia uptown, has changed the character of the area profoundly.

I had the chance to walk around Greenwich Village  (see map)  for the first time in several years. I know that this is going to sound like a "grandpa is complaining about change again" blog, but I was really disappointed in what I found....

It's in a museum, but is it art? Not intentionally; it was left behind by a cafe customer and cleared shortly after PHeymont found himself drawn to the image.

The Duoro Valley is a premier wine growing area to the east of Porto, known for its spectacular scenery and port wine.

Built in an old 1930's cafe and retaining many of the building's original art deco features, the Imperial McDonalds is likely the most attractive McDonald's int he world.
