I was surprised to see that Buddhist bibles are placed in the bedside draw. Just like a Gideon's bible. Really is an amazing read ! Full of proverbs like : "A man who commits adultery likes licking jam off a sharp knife !"

The Dustia Resort sounds incredible (except for the little pests, lol). Will definitely have to keep it in mind when we travel to Thailand one day. Thanks for a great post and awesome pictures.

Lovely photos and blog Karl. Refreshed my delightful memories of our visit there. One other word of advice for the end of your tour is to visit the Massage School which is in the temple complex and have a relaxing and rejuvenating massage - feet or more depending on time available.

Re: HOW YOU CAN SAVE THE ASIAN ELEPHANT

DrFumblefinger ·
Thanks for sharing these thoughts. Elephants are highly intelligent animals, probably smarter than dogs for example. Wild elephants in Asia are having a hard time because of loss of habitat and conversion of their normal range to agricultural land. Most do not have ivory tusks so unlike their African cousins, they are not slaughtered for their teeth. In Sri Lanka I visited the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala a number of times, which I've previously written about on TravelGumbo at this link .

It's an amazing place, Mac. I've visited it four times and would go back the next time as well. Your photos do it great justice. They only thing they don't capture is the heat and humidity!

Well thank you, esteemed Gurus! It is just SO photogenic and almost surreal in its beauty and exotic creatures. A continual "trip" to experience. And how do you ever truly capture the "essence" of the temple.... Just keep trying I guess....

Fascinating, Mac! I have to admit some of the shellfish on sale look like something out of the Jurassic era, but with a little Chili peppers and lime juice, I'm sure they're extremely good. Did you and your lovely wife indulge in the feast at all?

Ah yes Karl, we partook a little here and there but in retrospect were not sufficiently adventurous. We shall return! (apologies to Gen MacArthur).

Amongst the most magnificent sights in Bangkok is the Wat Phra Kaew temple, or the Temple of the Jade Buddha. It is a riot of gilded and colorful figures in a very concentrated area within the grounds of the King's Grand Palace in Bangkok.

The easy life at Koh Kood island, Thailand

Koh Kood, or Koh Kut, was for me an unknown island, and I was excited to experience it. The island is fairly large, actually the 4th largest in Thailand, and is situated in the eastern part, just a short boat ride from  Trat.

Thai families love to 'snack on the hoof' and it is this most enjoyable custom that has given rise to the magnificent selection of street food that is on offer at the evening "walking markets" that we discovered on three of the islands in the Gulf of Thailand.

Today's highlighted photos are of Thailand’s Phi Phi islands – countless fortress-like small islands situated between Phuket and the mainland.   These islands have been slowly and beautifully carved over many years and have a narrower base than top.
