January 1, 2019: Kusiva Monastery, Russia

What I appreciate about taking a Viking River Cruise is the opportunity to explore lots of different villages and cities. On my recent “Waterways of the Tsars” cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I was able to experience many not-talked-about communities along the way.

Kuzina is home to the grand and massive Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery with its medieval religious artifacts dating to the late fourteenth century.

6-13When the soviets came into power, the monastery was closed. Fortunately it wasn’t torn down or converted to secular uses. Instead it was designated as the Kirillov-Belozersky Museum of History, Art, and Architecture in 1929.

Although monks were readmitted to a portion of the complex in 1998, the main campus remains a museum.
