Haitian Monument, Savannah, Georgia

 

The life-sized bronze figures, sculpted by James Mastin, were dedicated in two phases.  Four figures were unveiled in Franklin Square in 2007 and the remaining two were unveiled in 2009.

Over 500 recruits from Saint Domingue  (present day Haiti) fought alongside American colonial troops and the French against the British in 1779 during the Siege of Savannah. This  French colonial force included hundreds of soldiers of color and was one of the most significant foreign contributions for the Americans in the Revolutionary War.

The drummer boy, Henri Christophe, represents the only monarch to fight in the American Revolutionary War. He went back to Haiti and became one of the first leaders of an independent Haiti, and later proclaimed himself king.
