Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Feb 8, 2014: Aswan Boats, Egypt

(late afternoon on Lake Nasser near Philae Temples, Aswan)

There are many boats to be found on the Nile at Aswan, southern Egypt. These particular motor boats are used as water taxis to ferry passengers from one side of the Nile to the other or to various other points around Aswan. They are also called "party boats" when they are hired for various festive occasions. We took one of these when we visited the Philae Temples on Agilkia Island in Lake Nasser. I'm a sucker for a good sunset and couldn't resist this one.

The boats are mostly owned and run by Nubians from neighbouring Sudan. In the 1970s, many Egyptian Nubians were forcibly resettled to make room for Lake Nasser after the construction of the dams at Aswan.

If you look closely, the Nubian man in the middle of the picture is on his cell phone (!). It almost took away the whole mystique and ancient feel of the surroundings.
