Would You Walk to Mexico to Save 100s on Airfare?

It works this way: San Diego has a one-runway airport that can't handle more traffic. But, right across the border (literally right across) is Tijuana International, which has room for more flights—and lower fares to points in Mexico. Already, 2.4 million passengers cross the border nearby and take taxis to the airport.

Now a group of U.S. businessmen has a plan: Build a big parking lot on the U.S. side of the border, and maybe some hotels, etc. as well, and build a cross-border bridge about a block-and-a-half long, directly to the airport. Passengers would park, go through a customs checkpoint available only to airline ticket-holders, and walk across the bridge. DETAILS from the NY Times.

The plan is to charge about $13 for use of the bridge (about the cost of a taxi from the other crossings to the airport...didn't say what the parking was, although I assume you could also be dropped off at the lot without a car.

The article cited a family of 4 that was saving $250 each on the cost of tickets, which makes the savings sizable.

If they end up setting the rate too high, of course, they'll end up with what they have now: an empty lot.
