Where in the World is Gumbo? # 9

1-DSCF2763

Take a deep breath...smell the mountain air...and think movie scene.

No, not The Sound of Music. Not Heidi. Think Bollywood.

And after having been beaten around by expert guessers who have dashed his hopes of mystery and mystification over and over...that's ALL the clue you get! (for now, anyway!)

Feel free to toss ideas back and forth...it's fun watching the gang at work. But: Please resist posting the answer (if you think you have it solved) until Friday evening to give others a chance to see and guess a little longer.

If you can't resist waiting until at least Friday evening, you can e-mail your guesses to suggestions@travelgumbo.com, where they will be locked in the Gumbo Vault until Friday evening, guarded by trolls (NOT the ones from the Travelocity ads).

Remember: To post an answer here, you must be a Travel Gumbo member--but it's free and easy to join...just click HERE.

Well, nothing "Thais" us together like a good puzzle! But alas, this one did not last to the weekend.

WorkerBee, our puzzle champion started homing in by e-mail on Wednesday, with an inspired but wrong guess:

Once again Gumbo is taking time to visit a church. This church is made of wood on a base of stone. The location is near Barsana (Birsana) in Maramures county, Romania.

By Thursday, he had continued his research, and last night he was back with another e-mail, and he had nailed it.

On closer inspection it appears that the foundation of the church that Gumbo is near was built in modern times, possibly of concrete. In fact the entire structure seems to be in wonderful condition for an historic church in Maramures. On the other hand it is almost certainly built in the same style as the Churches of Maramures. When I looked for churches built in the same style I found Rustic, located in Maramures, specialists in wood construction in the traditional local style. They were almost certainly the builders of the church that is holding Gumbo’s interest.

After much additional searching I found the church of St. John the Baptist in Poiana Braşov, Romania.

He also found a bit more, to be seen in tomorrow morning's write-up, which will accompany the next puzzle.

Again, congrats to all the guessers, and to WorkerBee!

Considering that F. Scott Fitzgerald's only play, The Onion, features a character who is "the Ambassador of Irish Poland," Romanian Bollywood should not be a big reach!

However...not so puzzling. Just as Iceland is Greenland and several other places in the new Ben Stiller "Walter Mitty" film, the film industry of India shoots in unexpected places...although in the video whose link is HEREthere's no attempt to play it as somewhere else.
