Where in the World is Gumbo (#38)

3985-001

Let's start by agreeing...this is not the Hogwarts station. But where is it, and what's its story? Gumbo arrived here as second choice because he couldn't go where he meant to, but if he went again, he wouldn't have to arrive here! Are we mysterious enough?

THE RULES

  1. Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments...
  2. If you absolutely know where it is....please give others a couple of days to work on it before you pounce. If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it to suggestions@travelgumbo.com and we'll publish it Saturday night...right or wrong!
  3. To post here, you need to be  a member...but that's free and easy.  Just click HERE

So, exactly where is Gumbo today?

Well, I suspect it is England, given the overflowing litter bin and no parking yellow lines (oh joy!). It looks probably to be a minor town station from the Victorian era. And now I'm clutching at straws!!

Here's a view of the other side of the station...economizers once wanted to remove these beautiful fixtures, but after protests, they were restored instead. When the railroad first opened in this town, half the population were on "poor relief;" the railroad enabled its goods to sell over a wider area and made the town prosperous.

I'm tempted to suspect that it is in the north of England, perhaps near York. The trouble is that so much of the country outside the major cities would have been poor.

The clue must be in "selling it's goods" which suggests that they had a manufacturing or production base already established. Or was that perhaps farming produce....

I do like the filigree cast iron roof supports - very "of the period".

Well, folks...if you look closely at Garry's second picture, you can see the station sign for Kettering (Northamptonshire)...and that's the answer!

Full details tomorrow, and a new puzzle on Wednesday morning...be sure to get in on it!

And congrats to Garry! (Care to share with the readers how you did it?)
