Virgin Atlantic in SkyTeam next week

Virgin Atlantic's planned membership in the SkyTeam alliance will take effect March 2, just over a week away.

That's good news both for Virgin Atlantic's frequent flyers who will have access to more SkyTeam member flights and lounges and for members of other SkyTeam loyalty programs who will now have greater access to Virgin flights.

On the other hand, it may mean the end of a number of Virgin Atlantic non-network partnerships including ANA flights to Japan and Air New Zealand awards that have been available at favorable rates.

The SkyTeam membership binds Virgin Atlantic even closer to its partners in a North Atlantic joint venture with Delta and AirFrance/KLM. Delta owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
