New cable car offers 'roof terrace'

If you've ever fantasized clinging to the roof of a cable car, hundreds of meters above deep crevasses and frozen peaks with nothing between you and the wind, your time has come at the Grande Motte cable car in France.

On the other hand, if you're like most of the rest of us, there's still space inside the newly-built cars that now offer 20 seats on top of the car. The cable route starts over 3,000 metres above sea level, and just goes up from there to France's second-highest cable car station at 3,456 metres.

To get to the cable car, by the way, you must first take a funicular through a 1,000-metre long tunnel from the village below. The attraction, in the summer, is a herd of over 2,000 ibex, along with chamois, marmots and golden eagles. In winter, you'll have to settle for a less exciting view, since the roof will not be open in winter.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
