Gumbo's Pic of the Day, Sep 16 2014: Valletta, Malta

Valletta

The capital city of Malta, Valletta was originally known as "the city built by gentleman for gentleman". That description may have changed somewhat over the years as it is now a World Heritage listed city.

One of the first cities in Europe to be built in a "grid" pattern of streets, it was designed by Grand Master Jean de Valette in 1566 directly after the Great Siege in which the Knights of St John and the Maltese fought off the attack by the Turks.

These days it is a cosmopolitan hub and a crossroads destination of Europe. One of the best views of the city is from the water and I took this shot while on a cruise of the Grand Harbour. It's one of those magical cities that you can never take a bad picture of. I fell in love with it the first time I returned to Malta and have now set up a business in the heart of the city.
