Gumbo's Pic of the Day, August 11, 2014: Driftwood, Haida Gwaii

Driftwood, Haida Gwaii. East Beach Trail

One of my most interesting trekking experiences was a multiday beach backpack along the length of the East Coast Trail, Naikoon Provincial Park, in amazing Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the "Queen Charlotte Islands").   I need to sit down sometime and chronicle this journey for TravelGumbo.

There were lots of great sights, like thousands of bald eagles, ancient totem poles, and pods of orcas swimming past (it's fascinating to be camping on a beach and hear them "blow" as they swim close by).  One of the most memorable sights of this trip was the driftwood.  Tens of thousands of trees were washed up on shore, almost like a graveyard of trees.

'this particular log caught my attention because of the beautiful pattern to its grain.  Not sure what kind of tree it was, but I sure would have liked to brought it with me and used that wood to make something with....
