Alaska drops companion fare to $0 for new cardholders

Alaska Airlines is pushing its Visa Signature card with a limited time offer for new cardholders: a free companion ticket when they buy any coach ticket. But it's only good for new cardholders who sign up in May or June.

The card, which is tied to Alaska's Mileage Plan loyalty program, earns a mile-point for each mile flown, and offers free checked bag for the cardholder and up to 6 fellow-travelers.

The promotion comes as Alaska is in the process of absorbing Virgin America, which it bought late last year. The companion fare will be available on VA flights as well. The Companion Fare is already a benefit of the card, but charges $99 for the companion ticket plus taxes and fees. The offer to new cardholders waives the $99, but the $22 in taxes and fees must still be paid.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
