787's acrobatic take-off at Paris Air Show

The big airshows, and Paris is one of the biggest, are huge sales fares for the big manufacturers and usually feature announcements of new orders and "show-off" moments for new or improved planes.

So the video above should be no surprise as Boeing puts its newest 787, the 787-9, through its paces over Paris's historic Le Bourget airport (yes, that's the one where Lindbergh landed.) Take a close look at the take-off—the plane goes up rapidly in a near-vertical high-speed take-off.

Truth is, you'd never want to do that in passenger service, partly because taking off that way is a tremendous fuel-burner, and partly because your passengers might never want to fly with you again...

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
