Thanks! Not only a bunch of good ideas, but also revived memories of years ago, traveling with our 4 kids in an undersized Ford Fairmont station wagon. We joke that we had to stop every half hour to let the hostility out, but the truth is that an assortment of fruit, nuts, songs and especially games made it work. The games includes not just alphabet and license plate spotting, but free-range imagination games such as "I'm going abroad, and with me I am taking..."

Although many Europeans take their full entitlement of paid leave it's often to cover such things as illness and family issues - taking kids to the emergency room - funerals - weddings and caring for others. Taking the car in for a service and repair. Visiting the Tax Office. Vacation time is a fraction of what's left on the plate.

'Nicht gerichtet wert' would appear to be part of a Bible quote in old German. The full sentence reads: "Richtet nicht, auf dass ihr nicht gerichtet wert" - "Judge not that ye be not judged". The artefact in question is a stove plate from the 18th century.
