What a beautiful place and what a great adventure. I hope to this walk someday too. Is there any advice you'd have for an American who doesn't speak any Japanese in going about this?

Thank you! I'm happy to hear you're planning on walking the Kumano. As for potential language issues, while knowing some Japanese would definitely make it easier to navigate, I don't think it should be too difficult without. As long as you manage to figure out lodging and transportation in advance, you should be fine! A lot of the signs along the pilgrimage are in English as well as Japanese, and though it helps to have a map of your particular route, the trails are all very well defined so...
