Assuming nice weather and a clear day, about how much time would it take to get up to Corcovado (Christ the Redeemer statue) by train. look around and return?

Re: Rio de Janiero - Part 1

Jonathan L ·
The train takes about 25 min each way. Up top 15-45 min depending on how much photography and looking at things you want to do. The unknown is how long the lines are for the train. Early is better than late.

With so much disinformation and plain ignorance about our recent history, it can sometimes takes a harrowing experience to bring home the scale of man's inhumanity to man. And to remember it didn't start this way, but with small injustices and prejudices that dehumanise some scapegoated section of society. Beware weasel words.

My thanks also for a great post. For a few years I used to go to Oxford twice a year to give a course. Once this was held at Wadham College, and I enclose a few pictures.

Rereading your essay after several years reminded me how important it is that we not let the 'big issues' of our times and of our past become just words and stories in a museum. It is so important to be in and feel actual places, and to remember that these events happened not to countries or movements or the like, but to ordinary people who were like ourselves. Thank you.

Rio de Janiero - Part 1

I recently spent 3 days in Rio de Janiero. It is a big city, one that has thrust itself into the 20th century. It is a center of banking and business, home to Petrobras and the former capital of Brazil.
